remember how many years these tools were in service. This specific compass was made in the 1940's, most likely used in WW2 and was still used up to the 80's until it was decommissioned. During its lifetime it has definitely seen some straps, and the Navy workshop were not very particular in matching colors,,,,,I reckon that the buckle part is newer than the tail, that's all. I decided to keep it in this condition because it is true to the last time it saw action. This compass even came in a rare original box - see here in the pic.
I have other straps and tails that were used on tools and would be a better match, but I follow my heart to keep it as it was.
