Officine Panerai

Incredible!

Ethan you've gone from loving the brand to hating it in just 13 days without even owning one of their watches, it took me 2 months of actual ownership to reach the same conclusion. I grew to hate the way my watch shook violently every time the power reserve charged itself and for me the watch was just too shiny and it didn't look like an expensive watch which to me at the time it was, I rushed into making the purchase which now I never do. In addition I had a platinum yachtmaster and a ss daytona and I bought the 321 gmt power reserve after admiring one that my friend had just bought. But watches are very personal items and whilst Panerai is no longer for me I do think that they look fantastic on other people particularly skinny Italian types and I would be making myself look like an ignorant fool if I referred to the brand as crap. I also decided to sell both of my Rolexes as the brand, for me, is just too common and because the watch is machine made with no clever case finishing they are too easily and successfully copied. After 2 years of owning Rolexes and seeing every other person wearing one I no longer felt that they were special.

On reflection I should have waited and bought one of the Panerai manifittura range as then the watch would have felt far more like a one off, had a better movement and I probably would have still owned it today and been a massive Panerai fan, instead I sold the Panerai and Rolexes and bought my first (of now two and soon three) AP offshores and I haven't looked back since. As a massive watch fan I don't agree that a particular brand can be descibed as crap but I do think that different brands suit different people. Every Patek except the 5980 looks wrong on me and I would love something like the Cartier santos dumont skeleton but again it doesn't suit me so I admire those watches and enjoy reading about them even though I will never buy one.

It may be Ethan that the mass produced Rolex is the brand that suits you the most and I agree that the submariner is a true style icon. Hopefully your lack of courtesy to those here will not extend to the Panerai dealer who has sourced you a watch that you no longer seem to want.
