I disbelieved the existence of this ‘Panerai’ Watch

Dec 26, 2011,04:16 AM

For about a decade, I disbelieved the relation between Rolex and Panerai for the model 2533.

I had asked several times all my acquaintances at Panerai in Firenze (Executives and employees), each time the response was the same; We do not know this model, this watch had not been supplied to the Marina Militare, we only know and can be certain from 3646!

2004, changed by beliefs.

In 2004, in a conversation with Maria PANERAI at her home, she responded and said to remember the pre-3646 watch, she said to have some documents about this watch, till my conversation.  On the day I did not dare asking her for those documents…

Then, 2009, I knew that one of the ex-employee of the former Panerai in Firenze had been retained to sort out the remaining ‘stuffs’ which were stored at Maria Panerai house.  In 2010, those ‘stuff’ ended up at one of the renowned dealer in Montecatini

During all those years, I knew the existence of the Rolex 2533, the first genuine model I saw was in London in 1991 (almost purchased it), it was a 2533 with a Rolex dial, the second one I saw belonged to the grand father of a car collector (Ermini cars), his grand father (watchmaker), on his retirement was gifted with one in the mid 50’s by Guido & Maria PANERAI, this one too had a Rolex dial.

I also know that the watch presented for the Instrument and watches 1936 tender project of the Italian army was a Rolex 2533, but due to his lack of performance under-water was replaced by GF Figlio for the 3646, I say replaced when in fact the 3646 was the first official Panerai watch model delivered by Panerai to the Marina Militare in 1938-1939

I have looked everywhere in Italy to find a Marina Militare owned 2533, till today I never saw one nor do I know the existence of one.  The only one I saw or know are related to Rolex or Panerai in Firenze boutique (they were also agents for many brands).

As for those PANERAI 2533 available, I would love to see one with matching case-back!

I have known the existence of those documents since 2004. I also know they re surfaced in 2010, Maria Panerai's hidden treasures. Those documents have proved, even to the most knoweldgeable Panerai Enthusiasts, that it was the watch model that was tendere...

Excellent work...Sherlock...:-) [nt]

Of ours, throught these scans. The Date is important, too, as the 2533 was falsely dated to 1935 or 1937, from what I read here and there. Now, we have some proves. Best, Nicolas.

Interestingly I just finished reading Jake's report on the documents

for the wonderful info. It certainly adds an important dimension to the history of the brand and I can't wait for the stainless steel version to come out. My only fear is compared to the original 2533/PAM373 , how much would the SS version loose out in ae...

Black dial + Solid Case Back, a winning combo.

 By: amanico : December 29th, 2011-03:35
If I'm pretty sure that they will release the SS 1533 ( Pam 374? ) with a black dial, I doubt they will go for the solid case back. I may be positively surprised, but I doubt it... For one reason... " Did you see, we put an " in house " movement! " But we...
