but I agree they focused on the wrong thing!  catching on the case size, case shape etc only makes it look like a replica or a wannabe.  but catching onto good design traits and ideas will open up endless variation.

Copying Panerai, the fashionization of horology

Why did every other brand copy the bigger case size but not the strap change fashion functionality? The strap change is a much "cooler" feature of panerai than the sometimes ridiculous case sizes.

Okay... get a swatch ;-) [nt]

I do not see the point in your post, edward

Besides, not every Panerai is >44mm. Try out the Mare Nostrums at 42mm - sweet, sweet watches. And in my personal opinion, it won't be long that the watch world will start to gravitate towards the 'smaller' watches.

curious

because I am curious why no other brands have caught on to the watch strap craze that makes panerai so fun. exotic leathers like kangaroo and singray, big scaled croc hide straps, it really lets you personalize a watch

many are thinking the same as you

that watches will return to smaller sizes, only I am hearing this for the past few years and I doubt there will be a return to smaller size alone. I think both small (36-39mm & 40-44mm) will coexist for many years. I agree that the oversized watches (...

I think it's all relative...

We had a 'mad' rush toward bigger size and the extreme end 'broke' thru 50mm and found little support. As such, I think we'll find manufacturer retracting to 47mm and below. Having said that, I do see the momentum of 'average' size edging bigger, and I wo...

big watches were not a Panerai invention :)

you should check out vintage Longines, even in the 90's the ROO had a "big" part in the progression to oversize watches oh..from the 1960's to the 90's Rolex sports were considered BIG by many.. the speedmaster / seamaster 300..42mm oh and the polaris..hu...

Well, check out GPF 2/56 (60mm), then what is meant here is back in the 90's

The most infamous large watches that were available in the 90's were for a large part only PANERAI with their 44mm pieces (Pre-Vendome). As for before, for under-water watches I think Panerai watches were the largest. I agree with you some Pilot watches w...

Here's my reason why others have not followed on with the wide strap frenzy

 By: AnthonyTsai : November 14th, 2011-19:09
because all the other brands are too lazy to make a NEW WIDE buckle or deployant clasp ... Either lazy or too cheap to pay for development and production costs Many brands are still stuck in the past and refuse to increase the widths of their buckles to a...

You have an excellent point, Anthony. [nt]
