I inspected the watch at the Boutique next to the original Geophysic re-issue and JLC's other offerings. It's a perfectly nice piece, with hefty if not elegant proportions. The dead seconds doesn't delight or disturb me, as I don't relate it to quartz watches in any way. And I recognize the technical savvy required to accomplish it. But I look at the watch in the context of JLC's other offerings and don't really understand where they are taking us.
How many time only/time and date automatics do we need? Is there a point where choice simply paralyzes a buyer and results in no choice at all? How do all these Ultra-Thins, Master Controls and now Geophysics relate to each other? Or to the brand? I fear that JLC is producing watches like the new Geophysic because they can...not because they are outfitting a well-considered line strategy. Perhaps the "something for everyone" approach is a strategy that works well in the showroom, like laundry detergent brands in the supermarket. But I wonder what it's doing for those of us who expect JLC to project a singular personality and set of values brought forth in a cohesive product line. Ken
