Jaeger-LeCoultre

Here's The Deal With...

... These watches... The new movement is an amazing piece of technology and just by nature of its design makes for exciting possibilities.  The deadbeat seconds feature is cool and I love the talk that it turns people off because it looks like a quartz watch.  End of the day, who cares if it looks like it might be a quartz watch... the owner knows it is fully mechanical and truth be told most people who would see the UT would be more taken by the dial work rather than the way the seconds hand tracks the dial.

Personally, I find the Geophysic version a bit too small.  And while the UT is absolutely the perfect size watch, I have some minor issues with this version.  The dial is gorgeous, reminiscent of the cloisonne dial work on a Patek 5131.  However, being a "Los Angelean", I take umbrage to my city being called "LANGELES". As we discussed, I would have much preferred a boutique version that had "Beverly Hills" on the dial.  While I was visiting you last month, if the Paris boutique had a special "Paris Boutique" edition, I'd have bought it on the spot.

Another thing about the UT is the fixed city dial.  Sure, like all timezone watches it can take a little bit of time to figure out how to read the dial, but once the wearer does figure it out, it is a pleasure.  I think we could all agree the Geographic is a bit more exciting as a timezone watch in that the wearer only needs to change the city in the display and the second time zone follows accordingly. Let's not even get into the Duometre UTT and it's timezone complication - c'est magnifique.

My fantasy would be a Geophysic in a 41.5mm platinum case with the dial removed so we could see the inside of this wonder.  Full exposure like an extreme lab would be something very special. That said, I am very impressed with Jaeger's bold release of these pieces... in that they actually released them. The watches were announced and boom, they were available - practically unheard of in the watch industry. This is what I find to be the best part of the story.

My Two Shekels... or as Leslie would say, "Che, che che..."
