JLC SIHH 2011: The new Master Perpetual 8 Days is revealed.

 By: amanico : April 10th, 2011-00:14
2004... The first manual wind 8 Days Perpetual Calendar in the world was introduced. This novelty was available in platinum ( Limited Edition of 200 pieces ) or in Rose Gold ( Unlimited ), or a spectacular skeleted version in platinum ( 100 pieces in 2007...

I eagerly await a skeleton version of this watch.

 By: TdotBean : April 10th, 2011-01:09
I love the previous Master perpetual 8 days skeleton. The new moonphase is awesome. Best Tyler

I don't think we'll have a skeleton version of this one...

 By: amanico : April 11th, 2011-23:45
It would be too close to the former one, in my opinion. But I'm not in the " Secrets of God ". Best, Nicolas.

Sad for me :( Good for the bank :)

 By: TdotBean : April 12th, 2011-00:01
Guess will have to look else where to fill the void ... This message has been edited by T.Bean on 2011-04-12 00:03:16...

Don't have regrets, my friend.

 By: amanico : April 12th, 2011-00:09
A skeleton version would be quite expensive, less in stainless steel, of course, but high priced, yet. Would you be ready to pay something between 2 and 3 times the price of the normal SS version? Best, Nicolas.

Am I ready?

 By: TdotBean : April 12th, 2011-01:12
To pay 2 to 3 times the price, maybe not. But the vivid image of the previous platinum master 8 day perpetual skeleton still lures me. The back of the watch where the dark globe lies excited me very much. Like the full moon to a werewolf Rgs Tyler

Intriguingly attractive .. Beautifully comprehensive .. Persuasively elegant !

 By: hs111 : April 10th, 2011-02:25
Well, well - another one to look at - Sigh.. - But ) Guess I'd start taking notes on " What to see in Real" - Interesting discovery. - Coincidentally had been "slowly cooking", no better: cultivating the look for a JLC perpetual Calendar, yet friendly it ...

 By: amanico : April 11th, 2011-23:50
Before any final decision. There are so many, this year, that it makes the decision tough, indeed. But, there are priorities, and there are decisions which can be made further, in my point of view. This perpetual calendar can be considered later, once you...

D' accord - Helpful advice, thank you !

 By: hs111 : April 12th, 2011-12:16
Yes-1 , you helped again, with your notes further to the great post: - am 'relieved' also - and the decision on a PC, (some investment as well ) definitely requires personal Impression in the metal and some deliberation.. Yes-2: you're right - 8 days PR a...

" D " is a good start...

 By: amanico : April 12th, 2011-23:13
Go first for the most difficult to get, the one ( those ? ) you will regret if you pass on it ( them ? )... Then you'll have all the time in the world to decide on others. With a bit of luck, we'll see that in June. Best, my friend. Nicolas.

"D"s: D-1 &/ vs D-2

 By: hs111 : April 13th, 2011-01:39
Yes, thank you for the encouraging deliberation - as mentioned: helpful .. Oh, indeed - - my "D.."-1 is confirmed anyway, quite happily looking forward to its arrival or better - appearance . As to "D.."-2, I am still turning, twisting and rationalizing a...

stunning timepiece

 By: georgeszaslavsky : April 10th, 2011-02:32
many thangs for sharing these gerat pics amanico. JLC made one of the hell of a watch which has nothing to envy to patek, vacheron and ap. Movement and dial finish are simply stunning.

Thanks for your input, Georges.

 By: amanico : April 11th, 2011-23:52
Though, I think some improvements can be made on the dial. For the rest of the watch, it is all OK, at least for me. Best, Nicolas

Absolutely beautiful..

 By: robbo400 : April 10th, 2011-03:40
What a wonderfully beautiful timepiece. I think the way JLC is making the dials less busy and reducing the size of the bezel is fantastic. This looks such a work of art. Nicolas' review of the new Master Géographique had me convinced that it would be my n...

Hello, Rob.

 By: amanico : April 11th, 2011-23:56
There are excellent things on this new Master 8 Days Perpetual, such as the case, the movement, the reduced volumes, and the simpler dial. Though, I think some details can be improved on the dial ( the moonphase, and the upper part of the dial: Reading th...

Another great report Nicolas

 By: emcquillan : April 10th, 2011-07:04
JLC has reintroduced a very tangible and practical perpetual calendar. The steel version looks appealing but I wait to see it in the metal. I like a lot the functionality and robust appearance of caliber 876, and the improvements to the case, but I wonder...

This is, of course, a watch to be seen in the flesh, emcquillan.

 By: amanico : April 12th, 2011-00:19
We are so used to see the former version that a new design of the dial may be disturbing, at the beginning. I feel the dial is cleaner, simpler than on the former version. It is really a matter of ( individual ) taste, here. To be seen in trhe flesh! Best...

like all the new features, except...

 By: FanFrancisco : April 10th, 2011-07:08
... except wish they can keep the applied 12 which is its DNA i think. anyway, this PC is for sure the one in my wish list! stefan

What I answered to emcquillan.

 By: amanico : April 12th, 2011-00:22
The lack of the applied 12 makes this dial cleaner " emptier " than on the former version. Some will prefer it lke this, others may regret the former Master 8 Days PC... Tough discussion. Best, Stefan. Nicolas.

I've been waiting for this.....

 By: Andy : April 10th, 2011-11:17
dreamy..!! I'm not convinced by the new moon phase but with a black dial (like on the new Duometre a Quantieme Lunaire) it might look just perfect....the black dial on the Duo has made many a man suddenly order one with good reason, and show's what a simp...

Well, Andy, you have a more conventional ( conservative? ) dial...

 By: amanico : April 12th, 2011-00:46
On this latest 8 Days PC. Black dial? That would be stunning, too, but for the moment, I taste this white version a lot. Agreed on the moonphase... I do think JLC can improve it on the final watch. Best, my friend. Nicolas.

Regarding the moonphase...which is the full moon, top or bottom..?

 By: Andy : April 12th, 2011-11:54
on the original it is obvious but I find this one hard to tell...it may seem better in the flesh. On the original the bottom is just stars which is obviously a new moon and the top is a full moon, but on this new one the bottom looks like a moon..!! What ...

Really like the new model

 By: docsnov : April 10th, 2011-12:44
The smaller size is better, it is still plenty big, and I like the new moonphase. The blue moonphase contrasts nicely with the red gold case, overall more attractive. Thanks for the post. Stewart

I like it a lot!

By: blomman Mr Blue : April 10th, 2011-13:33
But as on all PC – a lot of information crammed into a very small space. For me this version is much more appealing then the previous. One thing I find strange is the text on the right hand side sub dial: 8 days + PC… While power reserve and day/night ind...

What I find hard to read is the Day / Night indicator.

 By: amanico : April 12th, 2011-00:52
And it is a precious information, to avoid to damage the movement when you set the perpetual calendar at the wrong lap of time ( between 9 PM and 3 AM ). Thay might be corrected, IMO. As for the moonphase, I do think the same than you: Perfectible. For th...

Thanks for the overview Nicolas

By: Mark in Paris : April 10th, 2011-13:40
I think that my favorite is still the Skeleted version, it was interesting to learn more about it ! But as you said it is a quite affordable watch for a QP, whereas the skeleted version was around 70 K€ Cordially, Mark This message has been edited by Bor...

The skeleton version was / is a feast.

 By: amanico : April 12th, 2011-01:17
By the way, when it was launched, the MSRP was 80 K Euros, in 2007, for the platinum version. We're not in the same league, in terms of finish and prices, with the latest 8 Days Perpetual in SS. But I can easily understand your passion for the skeleton! B...

You're completly right,

By: Mark in Paris : April 12th, 2011-03:17
it's not the same product. About the latest, I'm happy to find a great manufacture providing such a caliber with QP in this range. Cheers, Mark

I really like the cleaner dial and the new case size.

 By: forumadmirer : April 10th, 2011-21:18
Thank you for the post, Nicolas!

My pleasure. Thanks! [nt]

A huge improvement

 By: ChristianDK : April 10th, 2011-23:05
Especially the dial and hands. Wow. Well done JLC. Best Christian

Different style, indeed.

 By: amanico : April 12th, 2011-01:27
And I suspect many Purists will love these changes. Best, and catch you soon! Nicolas.

JLC scored a beautiful goal!

 By: marcelo : April 11th, 2011-04:43
Better to read, more attractive and perfectly sized! WOW!!!

I like everything about this watch when I hold my thumb...

 By: Ruckdee : April 11th, 2011-05:05

Very nice indeed.

 By: Davo : April 11th, 2011-05:47
Chapeau to JLC! Another work of art. The Master Perpetual 8 Days is probably the perfect watch for me. The new version is a very handsome number, but I must say I still prefer the dial of the original. Thanks for the post, Nicolas.

Aesthetics...

 By: amanico : April 12th, 2011-01:33
The former one was somehow more ... spectacular, this one being more conventional. Tastes... Best, Davo. Nicolas.

I've always loved JLC's QP, even if...

 By: watchme : April 11th, 2011-06:51
it uses the only "outsourced" module in the lineup: the Kurt Klaus perpetual calendar. My only wish for this piece is that the 3 o'clock subdial would have included a sweep seconds hand. Can't wait to see it in the metal. For me, SS on Navy strap is the w...

" Outsourced "?

 By: amanico : April 12th, 2011-01:40
Well, it was at a time when some brands invest their efforts in common, don't you think? So, do we still have to consider that this movement, or more precisely, the module, is outsourced? But you're right to add that precision, by the way. Sweep second ha...

The sweep seconds...

and a more common moonphase disc rotating through and aperture would be my 2 "improvements" if I had my way. Unfortunately, although the moonphase is "pretty," like this, it's a bit too "Chopard" for me, and draws your eye squarely on that dark circle, wh...

From a JLC lover to another, Dean: Thanks.

 By: amanico : April 12th, 2011-14:40
Yep, there are some excellent ideas, here. What you say about the moonphase is an excellent suggestion, too. Best, Nicolas

There are some aspects of the novelty...

....which I prefer, and some aspects of the original model that I like better. On the new release I prefer the moonphase and the dial does seem cleaner and more elegant. However, the day/night indicator and power reserve on the old model are better for me...

100% d´accord!

 By: anaesdoc : April 11th, 2011-09:57
Hi Daos, your post sums up my impressions as well. An additional feature I like about the new QP is its smaller case diameter. Overall the dial looks clearer, the MP is great, PR and D/N indications are less impressive - as you said ! Anyway, I´m happy th...

:-) Well, you always have good taste!

 By: dxboon : April 11th, 2011-22:53
Great minds think alike! I'm lucky this is out of my price range too! We shall watch from the sidelines together! Cheers, Daos

Is there an icon for blushing?

 By: anaesdoc : April 11th, 2011-23:27
Thanks for your compliment, Daos, which I can easily return to you. At least our tastes seem to have a broad area of crossover . Kind regards, anaesdoc

I don't know of one...

 By: dxboon : April 12th, 2011-00:36
...but I always appreciate your kind words and notes. Cheers, Daos

Agreed on the power reserve and night / day indicators of the former model.

 By: amanico : April 12th, 2011-02:25
But you can't put them on the new Master 8 Days Perpetual... The dial would loose its coherence, imo, as the former indicators were more ... demonstrative, somehow modern, while the new ones are more conservative. Difficult to please everyone. But good po...

Agreed.

 By: dxboon : April 12th, 2011-07:05
Yes, your points are very good. There's no way the old PR and night/day indicator could feel at home on this new QP. The new refinement of the model is pleasing in its own way. Cheers, Daos

looks great in steel

 By: donizetti : April 11th, 2011-12:25
I hope they make a Platinum version. A very nice perpetual indeed. I would miss the second hand though - I like something moving on the dial, personally. Best Andreas

Who knows? Maybe one day we'll have a platinum?

 By: amanico : April 12th, 2011-02:29
With a ruthenium dial... Hmmm! Best, Andreas. Nicolas.

Like the new one much better!

 By: Starman : April 11th, 2011-13:57
The "old" was pretty good, but this new version seems to have so much more class. As you described, the moonphase indicator is much nicer, and so is the more simple looking dial as a whole. I am not a big fan of YG or RG watches, but for this one I make a...

Thanks to You, Starman.

 By: amanico : April 12th, 2011-02:32
Some of the 2011 novelties will come in a very few weeks, now. There will be 3 " waves ": April / June / October. My guess is that the Master Moon and this watch will arrive in June. Will keep you updated as soon as I have the definitive information. Best...

JLC does it again

 By: SamEE : April 11th, 2011-17:12
JLC hits the nail on it's head with this perpetual! I absolutely love this watch, it is a perfect perpetual calendar! Thanks for an amazing post! Cheers SamEE

Very easy for me!

 By: dr.kol : April 12th, 2011-03:47
This was not on my list but the s/s version will be Kari's Christmas present to Kari. Best, Kari

You know how to treat yourself, my friend.

Will Santa Darja give you a hand? Best, my friend. Nicolas

I guess Santa Darja

is on the receiving side. However, when we have been checking together all the new offerings of SIHH and Baselworld, we picked up onpy JLC Tribute to 1931 and the new JLC Perpetual. Patek had also some nice offerings but one should be an attorney-at-law i...

Well, there are some details to adjust, yet. :)

 By: amanico : April 13th, 2011-03:37
As for the Attorney at law incomes, this is an urban legend, believe me. Best, Nicolas.

In my nearly 55 years

 By: dr.kol : April 13th, 2011-09:36
I have once met a guy who actually owned a Minute Repeater. He was an attorney from Paris, France... Best, Kari

It must indeed be an urban legend. :) [nt]

Very elegant.

 By: Goh : April 12th, 2011-05:00
I like the cleaner look offered by smaller sub-dials, the new moonphase and that it is available in steel. Could it be my first 'dress watch'? I really look forward to see one in real. My only wish is an addition of a sweep second, to add a little life to...

As for the sweep second, there is a paradox, in my point of view.

 By: amanico : April 13th, 2011-02:31
A Perpetual Calendar is something which can be considered as immutable, while a second hand gives life, as you said it. Paradox, or complement? That is a good question! Best, Nicolas.

Awesome. Hopefully my next baby..

 By: neo : April 12th, 2011-10:15
Awesome...

This the most readable QP I've ever seen.

 By: foversta : April 12th, 2011-11:18
Kudos to JLC for this great work on the dial. Thanks a lot for the pictures Nicolas. Fx

Thank you again...

Nico for a grea review and recap. Great writeup and thought provoking as always! With all the news and excitement around the DSA release, I totally missed this piece at the BHB event in January. I actually had to go back to my photos to see if I caught th...

Dilemmas, dilemmas ...

 By: amanico : April 13th, 2011-02:49
Believe me, it is better to have this kind of dilemmas, rather to not have any! The problem is that there are many tempting JLC watches, this year: The TT DSAs, TT 1931s, The MUT Moon 39, this PC, the Duometre à Q.L in WG which is also a true beast, ...

A bit late into the discussion...but..

 By: moc : April 13th, 2011-22:53
I have a really fond memory of the 8 days perp. I remember watching the television with my dad a few years back,a report on that year s SIHH came up,the year the Reverso Squadra was introduced(2006/7???).A big wow for me....it started the whole madness......

The 8 Days Perpetual Skleleton is the Creme de La Creme, my friend.

 By: amanico : April 13th, 2011-23:08
We can't really compare the Skeleton with the latest 8 Days Perpetual. When you're obsessed, you can't have interest on another version, even if interesting. I do hear what you say about the Power Reserve and Day / Night indicator: They are minimalist, si...

Of Course Skeleton on another level....

 By: moc : April 13th, 2011-23:12
but out of the 2 version I still prefear the original 8 days..... You made that decision....I am sure for the better...you enjoyed though... As for me..I made a decision yesterday....... Mo

You did it?!!! Congrats, Mo.

 By: amanico : April 13th, 2011-23:24
When will you get it? Best, Nicolas.

Ssssshhhhhhh.........

 By: moc : April 13th, 2011-23:27
as soon as delivered I suppose.......hope JLC is not like AP hi hi!!! I feel good my friend... Mo

Thank you so much, Nicolas.

 By: boa2 : April 14th, 2011-07:14
I'm afraid I may have to get this piece. VERY afraid...it's glorious.

Cool, Howard.

 By: amanico : April 14th, 2011-11:41
There are worse fears, my friends. SS or RG? Best, Nicolas.

I think both are stunning (really love their moonphase), but...

 By: boa2 : April 15th, 2011-08:19
I find SS to be more "everyday wearable" for a debonair wannabe such as myself.

" Debonnaire wannabe "...

 By: amanico : April 15th, 2011-08:22
I didn't see you this way, my friend. SS would be more polyvalent, while the RG is maybe dressier. Now, I see what you mean. Best, Nicolas.

You mean, see me as an English major who cannot spell? :-))

It's amazing how taking away the 12 (which was always a misfit IMO) and changing the minute markers makes such a difference. Of course the subdial redesigns also helped this bear more than a family resemblance to its cousin in the Grande Tradition range. ...

Can we say that the Design gained in maturity?

 By: amanico : April 14th, 2011-11:43
More sober, cleaner, on a classic complication from Belle Horlogerie... Thanks for your input, Damien. Best, Nicolas.

Hands

 By: Timertom : April 15th, 2011-12:34
A really beautiful watch in almost every respect. There's only one thing I did not like at all, the hands used for the watch, for hours and mins, as well as for the sub dials. This particular style never appealed to me somehow. Rishad

Now that is a particular thought, Rishad.

 By: amanico : April 15th, 2011-13:24
What kind of hands would you have preferred, on this Perpetual? Baton? Don't you think it would have been too " common " for this watch? The Dauphine give a classic touch, which works well with the spirit of the watch, I think. But nows, I'm curious to he...

I hope what you say comes true Nicolas,
