SIHH 2010 ... What's new in the Atmos World?

 By: amanico : February 8th, 2010-00:12
This year, JLC, as for watches, introduces 2 very different kind of Atmos. 1/ A very technical and modern one, the Atmos 566 by Mark Newson. Blue or White, in both cases, the Atmos " Newson " is made in Baccarat Crystal, as the first one, launched last ye...

My favorite JLC ATMOS is...

 By: DRMW : February 8th, 2010-00:31
Cool pics Nicolas especially the macro! The 566 is great but my favorite is still the one JLC made in carbon fiber. -MW

You mean the Pavillon?

 By: amanico : February 8th, 2010-08:15
Nice choice, indeed! My favourite remains the Astronomique ( but the price is as high as the stars... ) or the Dunhill, which was released last year. The question is not which one, but when... Best, Nicolas

My favourite is also the 1930 reedition....

 By: sidneyc : February 8th, 2010-03:56
.... but after knowing the price it's not for me. I was expecting it to be cheaper than the Marc Newson one considering it's not Baccarat! But JLC proved me wrong. Doh! Thanks for sharing the lovely photos!

Each of those Atmos has its own charm

 By: amanico : February 8th, 2010-08:17
And it is really difficult to say which one is the hottest, to my eyes... The problem is becoming wider and wider... Best, Nicolas

extraordinary, but...

 By: Berny : February 8th, 2010-04:40
...I do not like the ATMOS566 logo. It is nevertheless a great and beautiful handcraft success. Berny

You're such a Classic Guy, Berny! :)

 By: amanico : February 8th, 2010-13:32
What do you prefer: F. Chopin or Serge Gainsbourg? Best, my friend. Nicolas

Beautiful pieces

 By: respo : February 8th, 2010-05:55
Thanks for sharing these, Nicolas. I love the Atmos Réediton 1930, in particular. One of theses days.... respo

Some other " urgent priorities ", if you allow me this redundance?

 By: amanico : February 8th, 2010-13:36
Here is the paradox: If I go on buying watches, I wil have no more House... So, an Atmos will be useless... Best, my friend. Nicolas

Good point. I feel better now. ;-) [nt]

 By: ArthurSG : February 8th, 2010-06:41
and yes, if the first edition is anything to go by, the look is indeed very timeless.

Deliciously timeless, indeed. [nt]

The 566 is a stunner....

 By: Andy : February 8th, 2010-08:09
and thankfully ludicrously expensive so still extremely pleased with mine now.. I remember you saying you visited the Atmos workshop and now I know what you saw...lucky man Nico. Are you not tempted with one yet..?? I look at mine every day and it always ...

One day, Andy...One day

 By: amanico : February 8th, 2010-08:12
I will " attack " the Atmos Thema when I end my JLC Vintage collection... Still have some to get. Then, I'd seriously consider the Atmos, and some goodies from the brand, like the alarm clock, the barometer, the globe of the world... Best, my friend. Nico...

Nico - on these gorgeous Marc Newson models....

 By: Andy : February 9th, 2010-09:39
how is the movement of the clock acessed..?? I can see the little lever that has to be moved to engage the movement but I can't see the door....on my glass version the front comes off. Just curious.. Yours, Andy.

From curious, you' ll have to be patient, as

I have a topic in stock... Best, and soon, my friend. Nicolas

Fascinating Atmos

 By: Dje : February 8th, 2010-10:20
Hi my friend, You know that I'm a great fan of the Atmos Newson. It is certainly the JLC I'd love to own right now (with an Amvox2), even before a Duometre. I'm even more appealed by the new 566, especially the blue one! They're incredibly beautiful to my...

The Atmos has an interesting, almost conceptual coldness, while the 1930

 By: amanico : February 8th, 2010-13:45
Is more voluptuous, sensual... I appreciate these 2 different schools and styles. Agree with you on the fresh air blowing on the current creations, my friend. Best, and thanks for your input! Nicolas

Which Atmos is the one you fancied less around the millenary corner?

 By: patrick_y : February 8th, 2010-21:49
Was it the very traditional Atmos clock with the gold frame? Or was it the very modern Atmos clock with the three cones on that served as a base? Or neither?

The very modern one! nt

the reedition....

 By: ChristianDK : February 8th, 2010-11:27
..looks absolutely stunning, I would love to see that. in the pics it has an almost immaterial quality to it, that suits the athmos concept of magic really well. I am, however not so shure about Newsons design. I saw one about a month ago and it confirmed...

There is always something better than my poor pics, COD

 By: amanico : February 8th, 2010-13:48
Seeing them in the flesh! Agree that at first sight, the 1930 is more appealing, but the Atmos Newson needs some time to fully discover it. They are not to compare, IMO. Thanks for your very well written input! Best, Nicolas

LOL...

 By: ChristianDK : February 9th, 2010-15:00
Of course you are right Nicholas, nothing can match seeing these pieces of beauty in the metal ... well except perhaps being the fortunate owner well that would be something. As for the Newson series, I will keep looking my dear friend Christian

The reedition....

I always loved the Atmos in every form and shape.Noe even more so.It ll soon be an adddition to my flat for sure.I need a sofa first but who cares?Mo

Who cares about the Sofa?

 By: amanico : February 8th, 2010-21:20
Atmos first! I love your style, Mo! Best, my friend. Nicolas

Very nice clock!

 By: patrick_y : February 8th, 2010-18:26
I am a fan of Gustav Klimt's art work and thus I fancy the Marqueterie. Unfortunately, since the works of art are too expensive (one of his works sold at auction a couple years ago for a fortune) to acquire, the Atmos that bears his work with inlaid wood ...

Since the begininng of this post, everyone defends his own champion

 By: amanico : February 8th, 2010-21:18
Some, the Newson, others the 1930, and some excentric guys like us quote the Klimt or the Astronomique. One thing is sure, the concept of the Atmos is truely fascinating. I will post something about it just after all the 2010 Releases... Stay tuned, my fr...

Running on love and fresh air

 By: efftee : February 8th, 2010-21:40
Are there any other makers of complicated clocks that run on air? I think JLC has this niche pretty well sewn up. Thanks for an elucidating post, Nico -- as always the nice pictures and your insightful words make you a joy to read.

Historically, Yes

 By: amanico : February 9th, 2010-01:59
But nowadays, I will have to check, except the Atmos Dunhill which is a JLC made for Dunhll, of course. Thanks for your kind comments, my friend. Nicolas

You mean to say that...

 By: efftee : February 9th, 2010-08:20
...the Atmos these days do not run on air? I remember my dad had one and it was a real pain then with it operating properly. Apparently, the severe humidity in SG wreaked havoc with it.

Naaah, they work on air, you're right. [nt]

Can you imagine such a wristshot??? A perpetual winner! Best, Géo. Nicolas

A sky chart of the Northern Hemispere, Zodiac signs, Equation of time, ... a bargain

 By: small-luxury-world : February 8th, 2010-23:35
compared with some well known wrist watches - unfortunately not for me I could love them both (566 "white", 1930 Re-E), each for another place and I would find one more place for the "Dunhill" "Only" the prohibitve price tags keep me away. Anyway, now I a...

If I had the funds, I would certainly select the same 3 Atmos...For the Astronomical complication ( I'm totally nut about this complication ), for the timeless and classic look of the 1930, and for the impressive beauty of the Dunhill. As for your last qu...

Thanks, Stefan,

 By: amanico : February 10th, 2010-06:43
I'm truely sorry that you can't view these pics! But, as you did, you can see them again and again on the JLC Website. As for watches, I can love Moderns or Vintages, without any problem, except from my banker! Best, Nicolas

Thanks for this, Nicholas

 By: DaMctosh : February 10th, 2010-08:53
especially the pictures of the original Reutter. A bit of mixed feelings about the straight bridge on the re-edition but just love that JLC is sticking to the original fonts; particularly the zero in the 10. Such a fantastic throwback to the Art Deco era....

A calming show, really.

 By: amanico : February 10th, 2010-11:13
That's what I love the most with the Atmos clocks, and your analogy with a fire burning in the fireplace is well chosen! Well, the 566 is much more elaborated than the 561, as you have Astronomical complications, hence the huge difference in prices. Thank...

The Re-edition gets my vote.

 By: masterspiece : February 10th, 2010-15:09
I'm sure there is a place for the 561 and 566 but the design of the re-edition is still cool, even after seventy years. There is something to be said about the complications in the newer design but for classic sophisticated lines, I prefer the 1930. Clean...

Nicely put, Bob.

 By: amanico : February 10th, 2010-22:11
Seeing both of them side by side is indeed interesting, my friend. I think the 1930 Reedition is easier to get, because it looks sweater than the Atmos. But I love Complications, too... Best, and thanks for your nice and interesting input! Nicolas

Thanks to YOU, Val. [nt]
