Why no love for XIX? Some theories ……

Jul 23, 2022,03:45 AM

I don’t follow the Mark closely so my knowledge of the history of this model is limited, but I’m curious to know why IWC skipped over XIX.

IIRC, the Mark went from XII to XV, skipping 13 and 14 as I understand it because these numbers are considered either unlucky or undesirable in some cultures (not sure if this is accurate or not). Thus, while there is clearly precedent for IWC skipping numbers with the Mark, I’m wondering why they did so in this instance, so I did some poking around into the number 19 for some possible answers and found this:

“19 is thought to be unlucky in Japan, mainly due to the fact that the number 9 itself in Japanese can be pronounced as ku, meaning “suffering” or “pain”. (29 and 39 are also thought to be unlucky in Japanese culture for the same reason as 19.  Number 19 is also one of the Karmic Debt numbers, the others being 13, 14, 16.”

And this from Encyclopedia Britannica:

“Eclipses of the Sun tend to recur in periods of 19 years. The Babylonians considered the 19th day of the month to be unlucky because it was 49 days from the beginning of the previous month (add 30), and, since 49=7 × 7, it was a day of great portent for good or evil.”

Perhaps IWC’s reason for bypassing XIX is as simple as IWC just wanting to designate this new version with a nice round number.

Or maybe, since the rise of COVID-19, the number has now acquired in the public consciousness a negative stigma??

If anyone has any other explanations or theories why IWC snubbed XIX, do please share. Thanks!

Thanks for posting. 5 day power reserve is impressive. Does this mean the blue dial is no longer affiliated with "Le petit prince"? Enjoy!

Who knows? There has always been a number of blue dials not associated with Le Petit Prince.

I had a Mark XV, which I miss. They should have stopped there, or even arguably with the Mark XII.

I have the XVI and I think it's a candidate for a perfect daily wearer. A sleek 39mm case, robust and accurate movement, and timeless design. It holds its own against any of my Rolex watches.

Fair enough. We can agree to disagree.

+1, agreed. Also no nrs 13 and 14: unlucky nrs in Europe and Asia.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Even if I know nothing of the Mark series (or of IWC!) I got curious about this, but don’t have any better guesses….perhaps really because of Covid?! It’d be interesting if someone (Viken?) has an official answer👍

Not much to add to what "L8BRKN" has already stated...

Why no Mark 13 or 14? The answer is simply due to superstition. The number 13 is considered unlucky in the US and Europe while the number 14 is considered the same in Asia. As to number 19, there are claims that it is considered unlucky in Japan.

Many thanks Viken, I thought IWC might have or even have released an official explanation as I got curious about the "numerology" here, but some sort of superstition could definitely make sense ;-) Cheers.

120 hours is pretty good, but still waiting for a no date version of this one, or did I miss something?

Ah that date window, still a bit off. Best one with date for me was the mark XV..

 By: Echi : July 24th, 2022-07:57
For the next iteration, hopefully a 38-39mm to mitigate the date window placement or a no date version. And with a bracelet option. Overall a nice offer for sure

I still adore the recent Spitfire version. Dial symmetry and case size were perfect IMO with a mischievous touch of faux patina in certain indices. ☺️
