Thanks for the additional information, Catherine.
On a related note, there is a lot of misinformation about magnetic fields in our environment and I am unfortunately not in a position to add anything useful to the discussion! Obviously a lot of household appliances generate magnetic fields but I have been sceptical as to whether most of these are strong enough to affect a wristwatch. When one of my watches recently started to run up to 15 min fast per day, the first thing the sales staff in the AD asked me was "did I leave the watch near a clock radio?" The answer was "occasionally" but the watch only required relubrication.
Looking around the www for information on magnetic fields I note that a couple of superconducting magnets are currently being built: one at the Hahn-Meitner Institute in Berlin will generate a magnetic field of up to 30 Tesla. It's enough to make a WIS run screaming from the city.

Andrew
