Case & Dial
I love ceramic watches, so, it is a huge plus for me that this watch case is in full ceramic. Seems like the chronograph pushers are also in ceramic. Additionally, the case back is made of some “new” IWC material which is a combination of titanium and ceramic, lightness of titanium and “like” hardness of ceramic, hopefully not as a brittle as ceramic.
Dial wise, not my most preferred layout. I myself, and this is subjective, prefer a Daytona type chronograph layout. However, I do understand that this IWC must make room for day and date. As such, the chronograph layout isn’t the worst, and must accommodate many features, and I guess I understand the design language to incorporate a day/date function.
I think the white markers and hands play well with the rest of the black background, the touches of red, along with the red “plane” figure out of metal, is a nice touch.
Pushers and crown seem well proportioned to the case. I really like the little red “lined” accents on the chronograph pushers, that fits well. Like I said above, the pushers seemed to be made of ceramic.
Strap and Buckle
Strap-wise, possibly leveraging the “green” fad of watches, if you can call it a fad. The green fabric seems “well-put,” in regards to matching with the black ceramic case. The stitching is discrete, and muted, in a good way, not getting in the way with the coherence, and design language, of the case coupled with the fabric colored strap as a whole.
Further, I like the leather part of the strap which is used to receive the buckle pin. Style-wise, looks a lot like the leather on the NATO of BlancPain NATOs of yesteryear.
Buckle is cool in black, seems to be ceramic too, with IWC embossed or imprinted, if that is the term, on the black buckle.
Movement
46 hours Power Reserve seems short by today's standards, but not horrible, frequency of 28800.0 vph (4.0 hz) seems pretty standard I guess, I don’t know movement speeds well, so I could be wrong. Côtes de Genève, perlage on the movement seems pretty nice, but, you won’t be able to see it with a solid case-back.
Conclusion
I made sure I took a minute, or two, to really “consume” the whole watch in its entirety. Dial, case, strap, buckle, color and colors, materials, among other things. Also considered the movement.
In my opinion, it is good “pilots” watch. Not something I need to run out and get. But a solid watch. The movement is nothing breakthrough, not sure if it’s a proven workhorse, maybe it is, I don’t know, don’t have much experience with this movement and its derivatives.
My $0.02.
