Independents

Thank you kindly ....

dear Oliver! Yes, the Jump Second Pilot is definitely the more interesting watch mechanics-wise, and has a very "pure" appearance. Personally, I would consider it perfect with some kind of a date, maybe a pointer date, that would not add a disturbing window in the dial.

Regarding the hands, I think that quality issues should not be taken too lightly. Sometimes, small production flaws can cause more serious problems:

As far as I can state now, these hands of a fifteen years old timepiece are not rotten due to contact with humidity, but there is rather reason to assume that it is the consequence of flaws during the production already, maybe during the galvanisation process.

Sloppily rhodinised hands can become wrecks within a relatively short period, SL particles lost from the hands can enter the movement through dial openings and compromise, even damage the movement.

I don't think the problem of an expanding industry depending on a relatively small group of part supplying companies is one of the most recent years only. However, I also believe it has been aggravated by the tendency of such parts becoming always more complex-shaped and more difficult to produce. Especially the dial and crystal producers can tell a thing or two about it.

Since the Swiss made, better: Swissness-criteria incorporated int he new legal statute of June 2013 do not generally preclude the delivery of watch parts from outside Switzerland, I only hope that some competition from other - possibly Asian - suppliers might prove healthy for the Swiss suppliers.
