Richard Daners...
Oct 14, 2011,23:23 PM
This watch, of the 'bras en l'air' variety, is of a style which today is probably associated more with Thomas Prescher than anybody else. Apparently, though, it was created by Richard Daners for Gubelin, and he was by all accounts a formidable watchmaker in his own right. This was from a 1990/1991 series of seven pieces featuring the 'Colossus of Rhodes', four of which were sold under the Gubelin banner.

It may have been the first time this particular type of display was used in a wristwatch as opposed to a pocket watch, as seen in this lovely VC example:

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Prescher spent time working with Daners and producing watches for Gubelin. Here is a Prescher/Gubelin piece - "Ikarus":

By way of comparison, here is a magnificent example of the contemporary style by Prescher, also a personal favourite:

But back to Richard Daners. The man himself retired in 1995, but obviously not before passing on some skills to others. For those interested in symmetry, care to guess what else he designed whilst working for Gubelin? This - a triple-axis tourbillon!

Are there other Daners pieces out there?
