Am I so lazy that I cannot intervene with my watch once every other month? What if I said I enjoy “playing” with my watch? Collectors love manual winding as it allows interaction with their timepieces (and of course an unobstructed view of the backside), so why then is it such a big deal to have to put in 10 seconds of work every 60 days?
Annual Calendars and Perpetuals only solve such problems if you either wear the watch every single day or keep it on a winder. Keeping a watch on a winder while you are enjoying another watch isn’t particularly great for the watch, and will most certainly increase the service intervals. I’d venture to guess when being sent for service, annuals and perpetuals will be gone longer (most of the Richemont brands require the more complicated watches to be returned to Switzerland as they do not have as many qualified techs in the US) thus negating the amount of time saved setting them in the first place! If you do not wear them every single day or keep it on a winder, well then of course you are no better off than if you had a Triple Calendar in the first place. First World problems.
Of course the extra engineering of an annual or perpetual is wonderful and something people admire, which I can appreciate. But for me, give me a Triple Calendar and the extra money for something else and I’ll be just fine setting my watch ever so often. If it’s a bother, I’ll be happy to set yours for you as well😉
