My first attempt at dial designing!

Mar 24, 2022,00:56 AM

Ok, ok, so it was not quite my first attempt but it was the end product after being given so many options when ordering the SB05 from Sartory Billard.  I have never ordered a watch with Chinese numerals but I felt that my favourite Breguet numerals that were being offered were not as attractive as these Chinese numerals.  The choice of guilloche and the colour of the guilloche were also confusing because Armand Billard (the owner and the one man show at Sartory Billard) offers an attractive mirror polished seconds counter but I decided that the Comblemine made dial should take advantage of its guilloche prowess.  I have chosen dark blue aventurine for the hour ring which seems to contrast well against the salmon guilloche.  I had actually debated between a blue and salmon guilloche initially but I felt the contrast of the salmon dial and the blue aventurine hour ring worked a lot better, a colour combination that Armand endorsed wholeheartedly!  As I love my watches to be as light as possible, I have requested for a titanium case and finally a calf suede strap in dark blue will complete my watch which should arrive before the end of the year.

The SB05 measures 38.5mm (45.5mm from lug to lug) with a height of 8.5mm. It has a manual wound movement which is made by La Joux-Perret who are well known for their chronographs.  I like the look of this movement and one is allowed to have it personally engraved up to 18 letters.  The hands of the watch is another detail I find very appealing and the attention to detail even extends to the buckle with the Sartory Billard logo.   The brand only makes piece uniques which is an added bonus.  They are based in France.  I had started communicating with Armand slightly over a year ago and in typical slow motion Sham fashion, I finally decided to place an order yesterday.

Thank you all for reading.

Not quite a Voutilainen but good enough fort me! smile

What material is the outer ring? Copper center.

Thank you!

Blue aventurine

If you look here at all the watches it’s basically the same 10 watches

This is a real different master piece, which no one will have ever I like the creativity

Thank you for your very kind words and for sharing my joy with me!

I am always looking for something different but while retaining its classic values.

Wow!

Truly stunning Sham. I particularly like the gold and dark aventurine combination. Size is perfect at 38.5. Hands are lovely, buckle truly unique. And I can see why you chose the Chinese characters instead of Breguet. I too prefer the guilloche over the m...

Thank you very much Rahul for your positive comments!

I too can't wait to see the end product! Sometimes with these coloured dials, the light play becomes key!

Bravo

In addition to what has been said... I like the shape of the hands and the inner aspect of them as well. Nice guilloche patterns too!

Thanks a lot!

I know of one watch expert who mentioned that he felt the hands were too elaborate but I beg to differ as these hands to me have real character and are intricate too. And I take no credit for the hands - that is purely Armand's ingeniuty

very elegant yet edgy with details

You did a great job...

I have been deliberating on ordering a Voutilainen but was clueless as to what the dial should look like. I think I now have a better idea but one Kari dial is enough for me Thank you for you kind comments.

Gorgeous

Congrats!!

Coming from you, that's quite something, thank you!

I can imagine you taking a macro of the dial in all its' glory!

You would single handedly increased the order book!

 By: sham1 : March 26th, 2022-02:24
if you posted photos of the hands! I love the attention to detail that Armand has paid to the watch, both front and back.

A real beauty, the buckle is especially nice

Many manufacturers overlook the buckle but it is an important piece too. The salmon and aventurine is a very appealing combo, well done!

For me, it is near a complete watch!

 By: sham1 : March 24th, 2022-07:44
Apparently it is designed to keep good time too which is an added bonus Yes, I too was impressed that Armand gave the buckle a personal touch. Very few manufacturers do unfortunately.

Thank you for the compliment!

There were so many variations available of the case material, outer dial, numerals, inner dial, seconds dial, strap and even a personal engraving on the movement that at times I thought to myself, maybe I should just buy a Breguet with a guilloche dial!! ...

Wow my friend, this looks so amazing and beautiful.

A excellent choice. I just love it 😍

Thank you my friend!

Thanks for saying so!

I sure hope it does not disappoint me in real life!

I am pretty sure it won’t!

Thank you!

If it was not for the nine month wait, I would be keeping my fingers crossed!

You did very well, sham!

That’s for sure a beautiful watch and design! I especially like the combination of the dark blue aventurine ring with the salmon guilloche in the center. And the proportions of this gem seem to be perfect, too! I am looking forward to your first live pics...

Thank you Thomas!!

 By: sham1 : March 26th, 2022-16:51
I had initially started with a blue guilloche dial which was nice but the salmon guilloche added a whole new dimension to the watch. December cannot come soon enough!

You have great taste!

 By: MTR : March 26th, 2022-22:57
The salmon guilloche is perfect. ☺️

i think so too! :-)

 By: sham1 : March 27th, 2022-02:00
But there is always a danger of ordering a coloured dial without seeing the watch in person. There are various type of salmon coloured dials and I am praying that this one does not deviate too much from the photos. Thanks Thomas for the compliment.

My pleasure, sham! And very true.

Unfortunately, what you fear is exactly what happened to me recently with the Omega Speedmaster in Sedna gold. From the photos I thought it would be the perfect watch for me. And then last Friday when I tried it on (non-binding!! LOLLL) I realized that th...

looks so fantastic and has so classic dimensions that I can't imagine you making a mistake here. Also with the steel case you don't take any big risks.

The dial is perfect especially with no date window

but the size (how it fits my wrist) remains to be seen. 38mm and smaller and I would have been more confident! Thank your your encouraging feedback Thomas.

Thank you very much Tim!

I look forward to wearing the watch and if it looks anything like in the photo, I will be mightily pleased and relieved!

Thank you very much for the compliment!

I hope the watch will look exactly like in the photos

Congrats - Great watch

I have an SB05 - it was just completed so hope to get in a week or two. Armand is great. Agree its that choices can be overwhelming - I went through several ideas with multiple renderings of each.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing yours!

 By: sham1 : April 12th, 2022-00:57
How long did you have to wait for your watch?

It arrived a few weeks ago

 By: dmv4star : June 4th, 2022-23:42
It was about a 12 month wait. I went back and forth on designs as well - So many choices. Very happy with the final piece. Its in polished titanium case. Feather light on the wrist. SB-05 ...

Phoawar!!

That red seriously pops out! Well done on a brave colour combination. I am glad you are pleased with the end product.

Well done; I love the way the watch looks.

Not only the Chinese numerals but also the way the guilloche was done as well. GEO

I share your sentiments

 By: sham1 : June 5th, 2022-08:22
With Comblemine responsible for the guilloche dial, I am assured of top notch work.

Thank you!!!

I do not envy dial designers or perhaps it is because I am not a very creative person!
