It is a difficult question...
Sometimes, there is a very thin frontier between an independent watchmaker... and a brand. We have good examples like Speake-Marin of independant watchmaker who starts to build their own brand (and it is successful for Peter!). So once the brand "Speake-Marin" exists, is Speake-Marin the watchmaker less independant than before? Not in my mind.
To make the things easier, I would say that an independant watchmaker or brand is a workshop or a company owned by the people who work inside and whose production is limited.
So what is a limited production? I would say less than 500 watches per year. Why this threshold? I don't know, I have it in my mind!
Here at PuristSPro, we have an AHCI & Independent Haute Horlogerie forum. So to be posted here, in addition of my definition, we have to consider that the watchmaker is an AHCI member (or candidate) or the production shall follow the High Horology principles.
I know that it is not very satisfactory... but well, I do my best!

I do not get your point. Who is servicing the old wonderful watches of the past? Marine chronometers? Specialist artisan watchmakers! Vintage Breguets and the like? Specialist artisan watchmakers! Old wonderful Longines 13zn, 30ch? You. Know the answer no...

Thanks for your definitions, but what is really important to me is the attitude. If Omega, Rolex or Patek create something based on its own understanding of horology, it is attractive and independent. If Dufour, Halter produce anything only to look pretty...
