Independents

I agree... ADs are ADs, they aren't watchmakers...

Furthermore, the vast majority of watch dealers are in jewelry stores. Their employees are often lacking in the watch department.

I recall being at a Northern California Mercedes-Benz dealership and I nearly had an argument with a car salesman about how many liters are in the Mercedes-Benz 63-series AMG engine. He said it was 6.3 liters and I said it was technically 6.2 liters; he countered with 6.3. I can't fathom how dense some of these people are. It's one thing to be dense; it's another to be dense and stubborn. Then again, intelligent people who are stubborn aren't any better at all.

I would love to have a true watchmaker sell me a watch. I've met some watchmakers who were sales associates at a store in New York, but when I expressed interest in understanding some of the more technical aspects of the watch, they weren't able to explain it to me.

I've also met an independent watchmaker who did have some interesting stories to tell. But he wasn't in charge of the technical side, so he didn't elaborate on those details.

I've also met another watchmaker who is considered by many to be a modern-day genius of the industry. Unfortunately, I didn't speak his language and he didn't speak mine! How unfortunate!

I'm really hoping to meet someone that I can truly connect with who shares my philosophy. If fate brings me to Finland, I will know who to seek.
