Dear Tim, ...
having been in Basel for 5 days I can only say: how true, how true.
But for me its not about
how much money the brands spend, its about
how they spend it. Testimonials, dinners, parties and gifts - all has to be financed by 'us' albeit this is in no way related to timepieces. I'd rather have credible events like watchmaking 'schools' (Lange, JLC) or even better books that illustrate the history or contemporary watchmaking expertise. Hermès for example presented a compilation of auction results for their vintage timepieces, Zenith an excellent history of their El Primero movement (which also contains fascinating reproductions of the movement's technical drawings!).
One slightly disturbing occasion was to see what gifts even people like Laurent Ferrier hand out today... And how refreshing Stepan Sarpaneva, who - with a big grin on his face - gave me a set of watchmakers gloves he obtained minutes before as promotion item from a watchmaking accessories distributor...
Cheers,
Magnus
