"Steampunk" / technical watch: MB&F vs. Urwerk vs. ?

Dec 05, 2020,04:15 AM

Dear all, one type of watch I've wanted to add to my collection for a long time, is a steampunkish watch like the Urwerk UR-105 or the MB&F Horological Machine No9 (added pictures taken from the manufacturer's websites). Those are just examples, though. I won't necessarily take exactly those watches.

As  none of these two manufacturers have a retailer close by or even in my country, I can't just easily go somewhere to get a feeling for them and their watches. So before traveling somewhere far next year to make my own opinion, I'd like to get some opinions of the community, preferably of owners or people, that have had a closer look at these brands. Would you prefer one of these brands over the other? If yes, why? Are they comparable in quality and lvl of craftsmanship? Do you have experience with their service department? Would you choose a different brand for such a type of watch (watch must still be in production/available)? Looking forward to some replies.

I hope you will find your Dream "technical" watch.

Both amazing and very cool watches but also both different.

The Urwerk would the most wearable one . I have seen them both and tried them on the wrist . There both on top of the game and you can’t go wrong with any of them imho. I own a UR103 and have had great customer service experience. Don’t own a MB

Like you said the design of the UR is a bit more wearable imo.

But dont get me wrong , i would love to own the HM9 , its so amazing and cool . Def a piece of wrist art

Interestingly enough, I had that MB

For me, I didn’t like all that wrist jockeying. I own neither brand, although my interest has been piqued by Urwerk recently so that may change. I’d go for the Urwerk. IMO it seems less gimmicky than the MB

Makes much more sense now :-)

And yes, you're right. The HM9 could maybe be a bit too gimmicky long term.

should also be considered for pure technical watch, imho.

I've seen and played with both for an extended period of time. I prefer the MB&F for look and execution. It does not take away from the Urwerk as I think it is also an uber cool watch...

but you asked us to choose so it would be the MB&F here. Plus, it wears better on my wrist as well 👍

With regards to craftsmanship, I think MB&F would be considered above Urwerk.

The MB&F movements are well finished with black polish and anglage, where Urwerks look more machine finished. MB&F even gives you a custom box that's specific to the model, there was a post on this a while ago if you want to search for it. But for...

Well said J 👍

Really hope I can try both brands on the wrist at some point!

Have only seen them at a distance up until now

Ok, thank you. Interesting to hear about the difference in finishing.

Of course, I'll have to find out myself. But as I've mentioned, retailers are far away and in different places. I want to be prepared as good as possible to not have to travel several times to make up my mind.

When I hear "steampunk" I think Vianney Halter...

... so I'd suggest checking out all of VH's offerings as well. Good luck!

Big +1 👍

I think that it is about 80,000 for the perpetual calender but I have sometimes seen it cheaper but that is rare

He also just released a new watch with louis erard at a much more affordable price

I like this one. Very technical, very different.
