I think the main point Kingston makes is that the mind of the collector will create whatever excuse it needs to add "that" piece to the collection.
We can all create "gaps" in our trove, real or fantasy, so as to justify the one we are looking at right now; the one we can't live without.
I think Kingston discribed it excectly how most of us think and act in our crazy hobby 😉
I also act the same way , first i tell my self i dont need it (if its not a grail watch ) , then after a few days my mind is telling me its a ,must have , in the collection .
I'm trying to stay focus on 3 brands
JLC, Rolex and Patek and within those 3 I am 100% agree with the statement below. but this is insane. No one needs more than one watch

I check watch related news on a daily basis and I have bought tons of books, watch straps and even some simple watchmaking tools 😂
after flipping/returning a 3rd watch within one year i realized if i wasnt wearing the watch there is no point in owning it as i dont have a collecting focus or goal (yet..)
and stuff them in a safe. I just happen to like certain watches, some nice some sporty, some vintage, all of wich i am happy to wear. I once owned a iwc 5441 and loved it. But i used it less and less and for me its the most beautiful designed dress watch ...

And the exact same experience with a RG 5441. As well as a 325. I realized I am not a collector per se; or an investor. I want to wear them.
I think our hobby originates at least in part from the fact that we are somehow still boys at heart.

Innocent, i love that ! But as you write the reading and learning and discussing has also grown and become part of this favourite pasttime. Price is a more important factor now because i already own several pieces i really cherrish.
