Watches where the movement actually moves
Nov 11, 2020,12:00 PM
Sometime early in my watch life I discovered a few watches where the movement doesn't just turn the hands around, it flips, spins, folds, and thus changes its position vs the strap or bracelet.
I have had a few of these and sought others, but eventually got distracted by other features. Can I show a few and ask you to provide photos or description of your movers and shakers?
JLC Reverso being one of the most well-known, of course. Here's my Grande GMT
This is the Seiko Speedmaster. It just flips up to (theoretically) offer easier timing. In practical use it was useless.
But not as annoying as the Seiko Fieldmaster, reportedly made for jungle combat in Nicaragua.
You could swap these different modules around and into an extremely uncomfortable, square-edged, two-receptacle, hinged base plate/case/strap assembly.
Here's a remake of the original Porsche Design, IWC flip-up movement-with-mirror-over-compass.
Another great idea for somebody, but as soon as I strapped it on I realized it was silly (nowadays)
The following watches are ones I have wanted but NOT PURCHASED.
The Piaget dual time where a top movement is hinged to the side, and flips open to reveal the second movement (quartz I believe)
Finally the Sjoo Sandstrom where the top analog mechanical movement hinges up to reveal a second one underneath (digital)
What else is out there? Inquiring minds want to know!
