You have received great advice in this thread and I would also stress the journey rather than the destination. It will give you time to understand what is important to you and make the final purchase that much more pleasurable.

Collecting is a journey. You are thinking about the right things. It won't happen overnight, and you will enjoy it more as you research and experience your interests. I fall into the "buy what you like" camp, and wear every watch I own.
The only advice I can give you: take your time!
Read, learn, listen to your heat, define what would be the most appropriate topic of the collection. You feel lost? We all feel lost and we will always feel lost so don't worry about this ! Fx
