There is a "Mobile/PDA" tab in the header ...
... and it just simplifies the view, removing the extraneous information and banners. I use if for iPhone on the move for quicker downloading, but not with the iPad which does most things, except flash, on the standard forum views.

I have the same problem.
I take my IPad on the train in the morning sometimes and with the 3G network I can consult for about 20 minutes. It's kind of an addiction, but it is a lot better than being addicted to booze or cigarettes. A bottle never gives you a reply of advice, thus...
