But boy my brain and eyes hurt: the weirdly shaped 3, the 4 that looks like a 9, the 8 which looks like a crossed 0, the 9 that looks like a 6, at least it is consistent!

It's the quirky Hermes DNA which I personally find interesting. It doesn't detract from time observation. :)

Hermes is really producing some very nice watches with interesting calibers. Slim d'Hermes is another great example. GEO
