Steel is pretty strong, but 316L picks up scratches really easily sad The Black versions with the carburized? titanium are probably pretty scratch resistant, but I expect that they'd be more prone to bruising, though maybe that's an incorrect assumption since the titanium does have higher hardness and yield/UT strength, but lower modulus.


I think carburized steel is sort of "ideal" in the sense that it's not brittle, a vast improvement in hardness, and still really strong, but it's not a very popular material.
