Redcoral, I've seen many fellow purists customize their timepieces...

I've seen them swap dials; I've seen them engrave and initial; I've seen them swap out for aftermarket straps; I've seen DLC coating. In my opinion, adding diamonds (dial, case, bracelet) is just another level of customization to meet someone's personal tastes. In many cases, my tastes differ from my fellow purists; however, I would NEVER question their enthusiasm or loyalty because our OPINIONS differ.
I don't want anyone telling me what I can't do with my watch, what I can't do with my car, what I can't do in my house! Do you feel the same way? If not, who gets to tell you what you can and can't do with your personal purchases that you purchased to accommodate your tastes?
Lastly, good taste is relative and popularity is determined by more than just the opinion of one man.
