This watch a collaboration with an artist, so there’s some irreverence going on, but I actually find it to be socially relevant, given that people are spending millions on NFTs (exhibit A: the highly anticipated Tiger King NFT auction). I don’t own a Moser, but I appreciate that, despite their dedication to some traditional tenets of Swiss watchmaking, they are willing to inject a sense of humor into their product. Comedy is polarizing as is all art, but can nonetheless be appreciated as an attempt even if it doesn’t resonate personally. If anyone has been to the restaurant Alinea in Chicago, imagine spends hundreds of not over a 1000$ on a meal and being served an edible balloon. Not exactly traditional haute cuisine and certainly doesn’t make the person eating it look very cool, but it’s still awesome that a chef who could make anything decided to do something that makes people smile.
We tend to celebrate Silbersteins and Genta fantasy watches without reservation. This Moser is a bold move as it’s a step up in terms of price, but if a painting of a bunch of Campbell soup cans or Marilyn Monroes is priceless, why not 22k for a watch (I realize this is not apples to apples, as the watch is not an original work, but hopefully you get my point). You don’t need to love it or buy it, but just enjoy a small chuckle without turning a nose up. If I saw it at a dinner party, I’d enjoy looking at it and having a discussion.
Thanks,
Brian
