My essential six

Jan 14, 2018,22:17 PM

Hello everyone. I have been a silent lurker for on the site soaking in all the nuggets of wisdom and knowledge of this amazing community. I have been enjoying different watches from different manufactures and have recently pared down the collection to what I called my essential six. Each of the addresses my various needs in some ways.  The 6 are in no particular order:

1) Patek 5712/1A - For formal meetings and events
I have always like Genta's design and have considered between the 5712 and the AP15202 Royal Oak Extra Thin. In the end, I went for the 5712 after trying both out in the metal and I somehow I like the fit of the 5712      better.

2) Rolex ExplorerII - My faithful daily beater
While I have owned other Rolexes including the Daytona, Sea Dweller and GMT, these was my very first serious watch that started my journey and I just find it hard to part with. The ExplorerII have been part of many        memories and adventures and have the scars to show with it.

3) A Lange & Sohne 1815 Sax-o-mat platinum - For black tie functions
Happen to chance upon this watch and I took one look at the back movement of the sax-o-mat and I know my bank account is going to be hit. I love the heft of the platinum case and the story in the restarting of the
    Lange brand.

4) Grand Seiko Snow Flake SBGA011 -  TGIF relax watch
If there is one regret that I have, it is I wish that I have discovered the Grand Seiko much earlier. In fact, if I have come across the Grand Seiko collection earlier on my horological path, I dare say that It would have
replaced my Rolexes. There is nothing wrong with Rolexes and I love them for their form and function. But when you hold a Grand Seiko snow flake up and take a look at the Spring Drive sweep, the world just slows          down. Much as I am amazed at the finishing of a Lange, the Zaratsu polishing on a Grand Seiko is a sight to behold and no amount of pictures will do it justice until you see one in the metal.

5) Apple iWatch Series 3 - My run and swim record keeper
Ok I know the next two watches are not the usual pieces that are featured but they are part of my essential six and performs the function that it is set out for. The iWatch keeps log of my daily runs/swims and let me
knows how much calories that I still need to burn from that New Year's parties not that long ago.

6) Casio G-Shock Mudmaster - When the enemy base have to be destroy and it has to be destroy tonight
The G-Shock is literally bomb proof and I use it to do all the rough and tumble stuff that I will not put the other 5 watches through. Mud wrestling with a python - bring it on.

Will I be getting other beautiful pieces, probably. Its hard not to be tempted but these six form my essential base list. What are yours?

And I don't see myself going to to 12. But as you said, it is all about temptations, tested through time... I like your idea to classify your pieces by function. I should try to do that, in order to reduce my collection to the very essential. Welcome here...

Thanks for the warm welcome Amanico

Fully understand the temptations. It took me alot to part with some of the other Panerais, Rolex, Nomos to pare the collection down to the base. I guess where I wanted to build from a base to first address my functional needs and then build again the piec...

Warm welcome here

What an eclectic and nice collection you own there. Mine is almost always in motion even if I have a stable “core” one. My goal would be to own between 10 and 15 watches but the temptation is constant in our hobby so I already know that I will fail to rea...

Thanks Alkiro

Yes I think I will eventually build up to about 10 - 12 pieces as well.

You’ll see. The main thing is to take pleasure 😉

I think it's indeed a challenging --- but fascinating! --- exercise to try to build the collection that we really want... Personally, I'm currently at 15 to 20 watches, and I find many of them *highly* nonessential (including at least a couple of Pateks!)...

Thanks [nt]

That damn AP15202IP will probably be haunting my dreams the next few weeks I reckon.

It is a real challenge to pair down a collection.

You seem to have nailed the discipline by creating a theme for each watch. Now they have a purpose. Bravo. Bill
