interesting new watch just released
Aug 28, 2014,04:28 AM
firstly i must apologise for not having been on ppro for a long time, but i have been exceedingly busy with my photography and other projects.
anyway, this post is about an interesting new watch made with the help of the kickstarter scheme.
the 2 brothers that run the Watchismo watch site are well known for showing us the weird and funky, the unusual and bizarre. some time ago they decided they wanted to make their own watch which should be mechanical, very good value and have an unusual or unique time display.
this idea eventually became the Xeric Xeriscope.
i became interested at the beginning of the year because of its really unusual time display and due to its low price decided to order one which arrived yesterday.
the case is 45mm diameter stainless steel. the dial shows hours, minutes, dual time and power reserve.the hour is displayed in the bottom section with visible balance wheel. from what i know of watches i think the hour hand is effectively the hour bridge and rotates every 12 hours. with the balance behind it this could be looked at as a 12 hour Karrousel.
the minutes are displayed at the top of the dial using a double ended hand and a semi circular display. each hand has a different sized hole(halo) so as the hand rotates it shows every five minutes clearly inside the halo.
at 10 oclock there is a power reserve display and at 2 oclock there is a dual time zone which can actually be used to show a different hour to the main hour display.
the case is nice quality stainless steel with a crown which has the new brands logo on it. the screws on the lugs are actually fakes put on there for the look rather than the function. the leather strap and steel mesh bracelet my watch came with are attached using normal spring bars.
the movement is a seagull automatic. a robust and more importantly cheap movement. the finish on the movement is nothing to write home about so from a purists point of view the display back is pointless, however, the Watchismo guys explained to me that this could be the first automatic watch that many of their customers will ever buy so the display back is to show them how it works. that makes sense to me.
i've had the watch on the wrist for 24 hours and what do i think of it?
well, its certainly unusual which is what attracts me. you can see most of the moving parts which will attract many other people. telling the time takes a little practice, but thats part of the fun with this type of watch.
the case is well made, the dial is nice, it seems to be accurate and keep time, the dual time zone might be useful, but as an automatic, the power reserve is only there, in my opinion, to balance out the dial.
as we dont mention price on this forum all i can say is that for the money it is far better than anyone could reasonably expect especially as it is a brand new model from a new brand and was available in several different styles (Big Daddy bought the black and tan version with black case).
if you want something thats very unusual and you dont want to spend much then this could be the watch for you.
stay tuned for my next incoming, a very special watch purchased as a 50th birthday present to myself.
i hope to be able to contribute more again soon
