Horological Meandering

Intent versus perfection

Another angle of this discussion is the difference in terms of intent in the creation of an object, including watches. The intent of purity / perfection is what sets true quality pieces from mediocre ones – doesn’t mean they actually are perfect (rather irrelevant actually) but it does mean that the way they have been built comes from a (often personal) desire for as pure and ethical a creation process as possible.

This is what has allowed luxury houses to become what they are today – the initial step was not to create a behemoth of luxury but a simple, pure intent to do as good as possible – the best possible materials, the best possible craftsmanship etc…

The dilemma is of course to either stick to this goal or become hyper commercialized…. And there luxury takes on different meanings for different people….

The quartz/mechanical discussion is a little limiting as a gauge of luxury – a diamond studded quartz piece from XXX will fit well as a luxury item for some… yet for others it’d be an overpriced bauble of little interest….
