Horological Meandering

Actually no, I don't...

And when it comes to mechanical watches I don't give much of a damn about how accurate they are (or aren't) as long as they're somewhere close enough to it that I won't miss my appointment.

My point was not to disparage mechanical watches; I own a few of them and wear little else.   Nor was it to disparage anyone else who happens to own mechanical watches.

My point had to do with the notion of perfection as it applies to luxury items, and how some things seem to count toward perfection while other things do not.  Basic functionality seems not to matter as much as...well, as something else, call it what you will--feel, sense of wonder, craftsmanship, whatever.  None of the latter things are either trivial or pointless; indeed they're wonderful.  I love them, and they're why I buy mechanical watches.

But if we're pursuing perfection, then why, I keep wondering, do the more prosaic (Consumer Reports) things not count (or at least, not count as much), too?
