Horological Meandering

In many cultures around the world...

the lunar calendar is used for important holidays and events.   For instance, the full moon that occurred in the past few days marked the 15th day of the seventh month of the Chinese lunar year and is called Ghost Festival in many places in China, Taiwan and Singapore.  It is an important day for people to pacify the hungry ghosts, the ghosts of strangers and the un-cared-for dead.  Kind of like Halloween or Day of the Dead.

The Lunar New Year celebrated in even more cultures such as Muslim, Korean, Vietnamese is usually on a new moon.  So just by glancing at your moonphase watch, you can quickly estimate how soon an important festival or holiday is coming up.
