Horological Ramblings

I stopped by a local bistro for a glass of Chardonnay and a sandwich. I brought the Wristwatch Annual 2022 with me — looking for inspiration or to validate my latest thoughts about a new watch. I used to buy this book every year — this is the first one I have bought in maybe the past five years. Fun to see lots of watches in one place. I was struck by many “new-to-me” watch brands such as the Detroit Watch Company, Bruno Sohnle, Waldan, AVeritas, Pilo and Co., and more.
I have been looking to buy another watch this year — to add to my small collection of two Rolexes, a Patek, an Omega, and a Panerai. I am looking for something with iconic character, historical panache, and under $20K USD. For several months, my focus has been on the Cartier Santos in rose gold, the JLC Reverso Tribute Duoface (blue), the Breguet Classique (40 mm), the Vacheron Constantin Traditionelle, and the VC 1921 (36.5 mm).
I tried on the JLC over the weekend — very beautiful dial and comfortable on the wrist (but not sure I need another SS watch). The VC 1921 is out of my price range. The VC Traditionelle and the Breguet would be pre-owned watches (boxes and papers a requirement) and I have a good lead on the latter. The Santos keeps calling back out to me, but the VC and Breguet pedigrees may be calling louder.
My real point is, after perusing pages of watches in this book, nothing else called out to me (that I can afford!). There are several PP’s or FPJ’s that I love, but way beyond my means. That’s okay. Therefore, I think my list of options really is right-sized for me and I simply need to make a decision!
