Horological Meandering

Harry, your quite right. nothing...

Harry, your quite right. nothing will ever beat a
mechanical watch. i've only ever had 1 'kinetic' long term and that was the
Omegamatic which i think was a cut above seiko's system as it was 1988( or
1992 )and is still going strong as far as i'm aware.

i've had 200+ year old pocket watches still working
perfectly with not much recent maintainance and ingersoll radiolite trench
watches with no maintainance.

i think the term used by eco-drive et al 'for life'
is taken too literally by us purists where life means life. life to a budget
quartz owner is only about 5 years and if it breaks they feel its acceptable to
dispose of it.

in the long term it would seem that if that is the
route someone wants to go down they would be better off with a standard quartz
as batteries are cheap and can be changed easily. from past experiences,
recharge units are not as cheap and need a bit of expertise to
change.

lets face facts though, if you are a 1 or 2 budget
watch owner, $300 on a perp minute repeater eco-drive which may last from 5-10
years is good annual value. when its worn out a much better model will be
available for the same price.

personally, as i've already said, i cant see me
buying one albeit quartz, eco or kinetic as mechanicals are my thing, but they
are very good value for people who like them compared to routine servicing
costs on our mechanics.

life however, does not mean forever.
