For example this weekend I have been wearing my yellow gold vacheron constantin les collectionneurs chronometer royale from 1957. I have always wanted a YG watch but I knew it would not get worn much, so I decided to get something vintage, which imo makes it less flashy and more under the radar. I wore it this weekend for two parties I had. I probably haven't worn it in 4 months beforehand. It is more of a special occasion piece. My first nice watch I got was an IWC pilot chrono 3717, it doesn't see much wrist time but has special place for me since buying it new no real reason to get rid of it.
As for watches I have let go, one was the LF. Another was recently my polar explorer 2. I wasn't actively searching it out, when I was at the jeweler (AD) over winter she asked if I had anything on my radar and I said I didn't have a white watch the exp2 looked fun. Two months later they called they had one. I was sort of in a rush and excited to have something different. Bought it and sized it. I wore it the next day and didn't like how big it is (especially the wider bracelet compared with my sub). I tried it a few more times but every time I wore it I felt it wore large. Decided even though I like the white with orange accents. It's no use keeping something 'just because '. Funny I sold it to an retailer, all the offers.were below.msrp. that was fine, just interesting given the state of steel rolexes.
