First watches

Jul 15, 2019,05:43 AM

My first watch was a Newmark gifted to me aged 7.  It drowned in a communal bath when I was a border at school.  My second was an Ingersoll at age about 9 that went for repair and never came back, in spite of my frequent visits to the workshop.  That was where I first had my eyes opened to the workings of watches, although the repairer failed me, fobbing me off with excuses.

So my third watch: a s/h 1950's Avia gifted to me aged about 14.  I still have it and after a final service many years ago it is retained in my little archive.  Very scratched dial from when the crystal was lost, necessitating two hands being replaced.  Old picture below, it still keeps reasonable time.  Fixed lugs chrome case with curved steel back on original steel mesh bracelet.

Best, Clive

The one gifted by my Godfather, a timex, for my 7th Xmas, which drove me to watch madness, totally. And my first real watch, bought in 1997, a GMT MASTER 16700. Sadly, I don't own them... Really sad. Best, Nicolas

Indeed sad to hear that you dont own them anymore . Great watches imo.

I no longer have my first watch but I have the first watch my spouse gave me as a gift in 1978. As fate would have it, during the quartz craze she gifted me a mechanical watch that is in need of a new bracelet and servicing. Thanks for reminding me.
