Horological Meandering

Fabulous Post....and one comment

Great post, Nico!

The only place where I have a disagreement is your comment on the Montblanc Villeret Minerva watch.  This is a sensational piece with top grade horological values at all levels:  design, movement engineering, movement finishing, exclusivity, hand craft, even an in-house produced hairspring.....  I can see no reason to criticize because of the name "Montblanc".  Montblanc's resources were necessary for Villeret Minerva to survive and prosper.  Who cares if Montblanc acquired its notoriety making writing instruments.  There are a lot of brands these days that are newbies with no watchmaking history or a history that really means nothing (and these brands seem never to be criticized).   What matters is whether the watch is distinguished.  Villeret Minerva meets that standard in spades.  And why shouldn't a company that became known for one product be able to enter the watch business?  Montblanc went about it in the right way and should be praised not criticized.  I should add, that I lust for that watch!
