Horological Meandering

So, I want to learn a little more on how a movement works and what everything does. I took a walk over to China Town in NYC where I live and picked up an automatic knockoff to be my victim. Sweet. It even has a display back. Everything seems to be working...  

smash the cheap piece of fake crap with a hammer and spend $50 on a used seiko. its a real watch not pretending to be something its not, you wont be lining the pockets of what are effectively criminals as you seem to have just done and you'll probably lea... 

my goal is not to support "crime", of coarse I knew this is a fake, and not a very good one at that it feels like plastic as a matter of fact. It did have a mechanical movement which was my goal and my point is to understand how it works. If I'm unsuccess... 

not a problem, i just wanted to make a point. counterfeiting is a serious problem starting from the very poor efforts as in your watch going all the way up the ladder to huge amounts of money. best Graham

seems i've wasted $25 once I figured out how to take the stem out (thanks for the help) what a total POS this movement is. I think the whole thing is made from POP metal. without taking anything off, and being very careful... the movement would run, not r...  

turtletone, i think its best left as it is. i suppose it did show you what goes into a working movement even if the tin used wasnt of the normal quality. an escapement and hairspring have to work so inspecting the one you've got cant do you any harm, you ... 

Just shows you don't have to start with a bad watch to end up with a bad watch. But it's more likely when you start with a knock-off. It doesn't take much to get started, to have great fun, and to do real damage! But you get the pleasure of improving lots...
