I'm not sure either why they changed it.  To be honest, the watch was in pretty good shape even though it was almost a daily wearer.  After 12 years I thought it would be a good idea for it's first service.  Dumb idea right?  I've worn the Navitimer to all kinds of places and had it when I go sporting clays and skeet shooting.  Anyway, I agree with you that dealing with a service department on the other side of the globe is less than appealing.  I gave Breitling USA a chance to fix it, I spoke to a senior service dept rep several times about it and she flat out denied that it was different and couldn't offer me anything further.  Not a big deal to me, I just move on and make my purchasing decisions with other brands.
I still like the Navitimer design and had some sentimental value with it.  And of course enjoy flying the Breitling R/C heli.
