Sometimes fakes can impress

May 31, 2010,14:07 PM

An interesting thread. I purchased two fake watches on holidays in Thailand. I did it for fun and I don't wear them. I show them to friends as a curiosity because they are very well made indeed. I had them both opened because I was curious to see the inside. The look of the movements did not impress me.

Watch No. 1 is what one would expect from a fake. Very inaccurate and inconsistent. I am trying to regulate it and it is still to be seen if I am going to make it.

Watch No. 2 functions beautifully. By controlling its position I can keep it spot on for an indefinite period of time. I have no clue how long would the watch last if I wore it because watchmakers in my country won't touch fakes. Still, I am impressed by its accuracy. I find it unbelievable for such a cheap mechanical watch.

I would be grateful if someone could direct me to a forum where movements are discussed. I want to post a picture of the movement there. Maybe someone can recognize the model.  I would like to buy a genuine watch with this movement. I don't care where it is made.

Why people wear fake/replica watches . . .

 By: Craig LA : May 28th, 2010-15:12
There was an interesting discussion on another forum regarding fake/replica watches, and why people wear them. I personally believe that the VAST majority of people who patronize fake watches do so with the hope and desire that others will be deceived and...

To those who cannot afford more expensive watches, my advice is simple . . .

 By: Craig LA : May 28th, 2010-16:13
I humbly and respectfully suggest purchasing an authenticate watch that you can afford. The fact is that there are numerous options available for relatively inexpensive original watches with fantastic designs. There are creative, innovative and well made ...

totally agree

That's the point ! I wasn't choosing in price ranges literally, I was choosing in qualities that an affordable watch could give me , and I found one, so I totally agree with you Sir.

Well said ::)))

These same discussions come up all the time in other watch forums, particularly the point of homages. The Ocean 7 LM7 is as close to a visual knockoff of the Ploprof as you can get without slapping an Omega logo on it. For me it's too close to a replica. ...

 By: gweilgi : May 29th, 2010-04:33
There is a thriving industry of replica cars already, at least over here in the UK. If you see a Jaguar SS or a Porsche 356 on the road, chances are that it's a replica. More common, though, is "upgrading" your vehicle. Add some fancy wheels, a couple of ...

Most buyers of such fakes/replicas/clones/homages/lookalikes/facsimiles who are being candid would struggle to disagree with you. There is perhaps a small group who buy as a 'variation on the theme', whose motives may be less ignoble. We see some amongst ...

 By: gweilgi : May 29th, 2010-17:13
Yes, there is a moral dimension to this issue -- or at least one of self-respect, self-worth. But this raises another question: why, as a society, do we not condemn such behaviour? The owner of a fake (cars, watches, accessories, garments, whatever) steal...
