Memorable sales pitches

 By: DaMctosh : June 23rd, 2009-07:15
I don't mean to be mean spirited in posting this but after an experience over the weekend and a recent post on the FPJ forum, I'm really curious. First, the FPJ post (http://fpjourne.watchprosite.com/?show=forumpostf&fi=9&pi=3162406&ti=521641&s=0) about a...

The two most memorable ever

 By: SJX : June 23rd, 2009-07:32
1. Thierry Nataf himself telling me, in a one to one conversation, that Zenith is a national treasure of Switzerland - a national treasure . Emphasis is Mr Nataf's. 2. Jean Claude Biver and the story of fusion. WOW. - SJX

The pope of fusion ...

This is what he's saying ... Hublot is the fusion of the earth and the sky, in this case, of rubber that comes from the trees and of gold that comes from the bowels of the earth. This meeting of the sap from the tree and the gold from the mine is Fusion. ...

Thanks, Bim

I was cringing as I read that... oh dear. Does this stuff really help them sell watches?? LOL

You gotta hear Biver say it

A sales girl in a well known shop in Paris

I asked to see a FPJ Dpouble Resonnance, she came back with a VC Patrimony... I told her, politely, that it wans't the model I wanted to see. She answered me if I preferred it in Rose Gold... A very important detail: She was not Blonde... Best, Nicolas

reminds me of a joke I heard - Doctor was telling some women how blondes have a higher incidence of cancer (remember this is a joke) and how they have to watch their diet, lifestyle etc to mitigate the risk. The next day, he met the women again and asked ...

A salesman told me never place a watch with the crown down. And atop a padded piece of felt, no less.

Actually for non-screwdown crowns that's a good idea

 By: aaronm : June 25th, 2009-19:57
Several months back theCrownprince posted some pics of what happens when the watch sits crown down too often A

damien, Both funny and more seriously....not funny for the industry. That is why the FHH (Fondation Haute Horlogerie) came up with the 'Watch Tablet' computer and other training aids for sales staff. Regards, MTF

Some time ago I went into an Ad. When the man in the shop saw my Blancpain vintage he said: wow, nice watch!. I was really proud to ear these words.... I explained him the history of the watch, he was really interested in the story... but when he knew tha...

And I must add...

 By: E.J. : June 23rd, 2009-12:59
that it´s a pity the common unknowledge in the sales points. Always is a exception that confirms this crude reality, IMO, but generally the level of nonsenses that we can ear is high (or I´m a rare bird with lot of no luck). Them no must be "wise" people,...

What about the flip side?

 By: pingtsai : June 23rd, 2009-13:48
Frankly, I'm not surprised at some of the stories and lack of knowledge. There is such a vast array of information out there. I'm sure it's difficult to find and hire salespeople who are willing and able to absorb all of it into their brains. You really h...

I have heard my share of nonsense from sales persons, but then again, I do not expect them to be as passionate as we are, after all it is a job for them, and most of them only know the information contained in the press release, in which most cases the hy...

Ping, completely agree that some

of the AD staff are just fantastic and these are the ones we spend hours with in the store. Perhaps some of us here (I'm putting my hand up) with our obsession apply very high benchmarks and too much passion to something which others see as just a job. Bu...

Vigorous exercise tends to affect an escapement so that it runs a bit fast. This effect is very obvious in slow-beat watches (affecting rate by as much as several seconds per hour). It is still present, but relatively insignificant, in high-quality fast-b...

I am surprised if an average person can affect the amplitude/accuracy of a non-complication piece just working out in the gym. I suppose how vigorous is vigorous? I recall reading somewhere that part of the accuracy testing for the Speedy (by NASA?) was 3...

MKVC is correct.........

 By: TonyR : June 24th, 2009-16:53
You should never use an automatic watch at the gym if your doing excersizes where your arm swings around a lot. Its not good for the movement at all and can knock the timing off. I've heard this from numerous watch companies. Tony

When I was in Bankok earlier this year I had an interesting experience.

I went into a store in the Siam Shopping Center and found a GO dealer. They had a very attractive Meissen piece with a dragon painted on the dial. A limited edition, it caught my eye and I asked to see it. The saleswoman (definitely not a blonde) gave me ...

They come from a land of desperation to find a job

 By: 中野れい : June 23rd, 2009-19:25
so anything will do. You get to see these "I know 'more' than you do" type of people in many watch stores. Their attitude is snobbish but on the other hand, you also get to see competent sales people who will guide you.

From Hell....

 By: MiniCooper : June 23rd, 2009-19:34
you did right to walk out- ADs should not hire them, they make watch buying not enjoyable. However I mind more the arrogant types Cheers

Mitch, I know

exactly how you feel. I was examining a YG Duometre and it wasn't working properly as the time second hand was not running even though the power reserve was close to full. The second hand only moved when the chrono was activated but both second hands stop...

This brings up an interesting point.

Reading your post got me to thinking. If there are such people, recklessly shaking watches to try to "fix" them or to demonstrate that it's an automatic, think how many times watches in the cases of some dealers are so "abused". Those of us in the know mi...

At a Panerai AD I was visiting. I was really interested in the watch, wound it fully but did not start working. Luckily they had the visit of a respected watchmaker and he was kind enough to give it a check. Turns out the watch was just out of escapement....

Those AD's are not as well informed as..

Give a big applause to Lange

Tiny Lange & Sohne will take salespeople and fly them to Dresden and put them through Lange University. I believe that Lange has made a huge commitment to it's retail channel and of course, as they proven for more than 10 years+, to their collectors. ...
