Travel safety - how do you reason?

 By: Krinck : July 26th, 2023-10:38
I’ve used my beloved 5513 “pumpkin” as a travel watch for many years. I know it is risky, but I really don’t want to change, and I use my daughter who is a Kyokushin brown belt for protection hahaha! How do you reason while traveling regarding safety for ...

Too bad

I’m like you, a bit prudent and quite attentive which helps. Did you have a safe which the broke in to, or was it in the room?

Terrible

I feel very sorry for you.

Difficult times …

I’m determined to keep enjoying my collection and this means enjoying them on my wrist, however we are going through a period of high demand and limited supply and watches, especially Rolex are on the radar of some seriously bad people. My advice is cover...

Agree

I’m quite prudent and if in a crowd I cover it, and I don’t wear my Pateks in public. Didn’t think about hotel staff, that is a good suggestion!

Don’t forget the restaurants …

The same applies.

There is a difference between theft and personal safety.

I have three black belts and taught military. 1. Attacks are coordinated and oblique. Your daughter could go from asset to liability very quickly. 2. If you have to defend yourself there can be serious insurance ramifications. 3. You may not have the righ...

You are right

I’ve told my daughter to just leave everything if robbed, but it is a little comforting knowing she is not an as easy target as you’d expect when you see her. I’ve told her that the sequence should be: 1) Give them what they want, material things can be r...

I choose to travel to safe countries, not because of watches, but safety in general. In those countries, you cant be bothered about which watch to wear.

 By: @lberti : July 26th, 2023-11:27
Safe countries for me: Japan, Oman, UAE, Switzerland, some EU countries, etc. When i travel in countries i do not feel comfortable wearing a rolex, then i would take my seiko's or even an Omega people dont understand what it is, such as the CK859 ...

Absolutely!

For more shady places I use my Speedy on a nato strap

I usually bring a watch that would hurt less to lose, like my BB58

As long as you travel to a first world country and avoid bad neighbourhoods you should be fine. Just keep an eye out.

I really try..

…to avoid third world countries and shady neighborhoods.

The “bad guys” that want your watch …

Travel to the good areas to mug people for watches.

Yes

 By: Krinck : July 26th, 2023-12:49
But it’s better to be one potential victim among many than to stand out.

That's true

 By: andrea~ : July 26th, 2023-13:06
...discretion is always key. It's unfortunate because it takes a lot of the fun away from this beautiful passion. Sometimes I just feel like I should just strap an apple watch on and feel safer, but I love watches too much to do it.

Same!

 By: Krinck : July 26th, 2023-13:45
I completely agree!

Hahaha!!!

Good point

I use a Kurono chrono on strap when using the subway in Stockholm.

True!

Travel with a less conspicuous watch...

 By: patrick_y : July 26th, 2023-15:07
Thieves will want to steal your Rolex because Rolexes are liquid and they can get thousands of Euros for that watch right away. If you wore a Breguet, Breguets aren't as liquid, thus, you're less likely to get trouble. Also, consider wearing a watch that ...

...better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all

 By: j.jota : July 26th, 2023-17:30
Watches were meant to be worn, certainly, but I do agree with the suggestions relative to covering up when in sketchy areas/situations... thieves can't steal what they can't see. Of course, if you're on a tropical beach and get mugged for your Sub, well t...

Thank you!
