(Phew) Great Questions!

Nov 29, 2021,14:05 PM

Perhaps the answers are within all of us, yet for some on a more 'personal' level.
Is it the engineering prowess of Swtach's robot-built System 51 movement or MB&F's mind-boggling handcrafted Thunderdome? While 'value' may be based on some form of time/energy fair exchange, does that mean simple brilliance is less 'valued' than a more 'over-engineered' solution? Is it strictly limited to items for the wrist, or can we include for the wall, desk, floor....
i now do understand this board is more for the higher-end of horology, and yes posting a Timex was a bit weird on my part. My bad. No worries, as made a decision a month or so back to 'explore' the high and low sides of time/energy exchange for horology, because, frankly, the middle-ground is extremely overcrowded right now (with prices not always commensurate with the product offering... or hoops some want to make enthusiasts 'jump' through).

jmho

PS: Will gladly share info the more modest acquisitions for other chat boards. Totally cool, as WPS is for the more seasoned / upper-end scale. Totally cool, no worries and now i understand. All good smile

PPS: Listening to The Psychedelic Furs "The Ghost In You" right now.

Two just arrived, the band is reeeeeally nice! The timepiece is also quite visually balanced and lovely imho. When using the bezel, it makes a light-n-cheap clicking when you rotate it, yet seems very durable and stiff-ish. Wears well enough and looks qui...

Sure has nice lume.

Wish I could say as much about my Pro Diver. ...

Very nice

I find it exciting to find a nice mechanical time piece for a reasonable price from time to time.

A journey through affordable treasures

You are not the only one. Nice Timex. I bought mine cheap watches for rugged conditions, but soon ended up babying the watches. One i use in a harsh envoirment, and the challenge to keep it scratch and bump free is nervous breaking 😀. Albeit there are als...

It's hard to get exicted about a Timex

Right? This is The Purists. Do I like this watch... I dunno... I do wish you congratulations on any watch you enjoy... I am wary of Hodinkee LE's... they are such opportunists... and wonder if anyone at Hodinkee really cares about or would ever wear a Tim...

All good

No worries and I agree with your points. Their Travel Clock fiasco was especially cringe-worthy.

What is a "Purist"?

Is it interest in watches? their history? their "manufacture"? their value? What is "Purism"?

(Phew) Great Questions!

hey there again, Enjoy

No, I would not retract your Timex here--if it is, for you, a Purist watch, then it is, in some sense, a Purist watch, for we all are here to share our opinions. Enjoy.

Well, it's not a Purist. Again, My Bad

Let's face it, the Timex has a seriously cheap low-end movement, the case is 'good', the strap is actually pretty great. Really nice imho. Hey, many of us have invested more into just a strap(!) than the price of this timepiece. I might movement swap it, ...

Hey there Enjoy

Your comment/reply is instructive, in that it at least shows us that Hodinkee (or others like) will try to make a lot out of this or that... while not considering whether the offering has real value to the collector. This is the lesson, 'morale' of your a...

Thx, and have been enjoying cheap thrills.

There is a bit of good news. I had fun with the Timegrapher and it is now +5 sec/day. Yet soooo yes, for just a few Euros more they should have given a better movement.

Excellent song! ;)

What is a Purist?

 By: Mostel : November 29th, 2021-20:52
hey Greg, generally, relative to this site... it's a collector primarily or exclusively interested in mechanical watches, preferably NOT copycat brands (Frederique Constant is a mechanical watch but... probably not a Purist watch. Any number of mechanical...

it must be. We gotta meet one day

Thanks for the considered answer Mostel

I'm a relatively new collector with resources that don't match my enthusiasm if you know what I mean. I look at and read about watches which are far beyond my means because I'm interested in the beauty, engineering, finish and frankly the sheer spectacle ...

pleasure, Greg

To Wrap This Up

Being low-end, she was about 40 seconds fast per day (and beat was off by 2ms). So decided to acquire an OTOOLWORLD Timegrapher After some 'playing around' with the movement, here are two of the cased results. ...
