Need advice - a new Optimum or a used Tourbillon
Apr 21, 2020,11:50 AM
Want to get some opinion from u guys
A brand new Optimum or a used tourbillon (deadbeat horizontal). Obviously a used tourby is still more expensive, but how would u guys pick? Here’s my considerations
1. I like the layout of an Optimum more, but one thing I dislike as compared to Tourby is the deadbeat is on the back rather than on the dial. Is there a reason why Journe does that on Optimum, or maybe they would change it in the future?
2. Service cost - a mate had his used Tourby serviced by FPJ and it was about $5000 usd. Don’t know about Optimum. Never owned a Tourby, very expensive to own?
3. Dial variation - nor I think I can ever get a new Black Label from a boutique. But I haven’t seen many dial variations for Optimum, as whereas I have seen Jade, black, or engraved dial on tourbillon.
4. I hope it doesn’t upset people here, as I don’t buy watches as “pure investments”.
But depreciation wise, would I be better off if I buy a used Tourby vs a new Optimum which I would have to take most of the hit as soon as I walk out my AD.
I don’t know how optimum goes on Pre owned market , there are not many of them I have found. And a horizontal Tourby is tricky, since it’s discountinued.

Both iconic Journes as well I won’t discuss the first three points as they are pure personal preference (I.e yourself) however I would discuss your last point Journe now is actually doubt very good in the secondary market and maintaining value very strong...

You're mistaken about point #1 if that helps.

The seconds hand on the front of the optimum is dead seconds as well, until the power reserve gets quite low. Once below a critical point, the seconds becomes sweep for the remaining time it has remaining. A very cool feature to preserve chronometry, and ...
Wow thank you Sir!

Didn’t know that and thank you for pointing that out. I have never seen an Optimum in person, and didn’t know that second hand was a dead beat on the front too. You are right, deadbeat with the power reserve is what draws my obsession to those two watches...

Optimum DOES NOT have a dead beat seconds on the dial side. It’s a sweeping seconds.
In fact optimum has more interesting variations

Apart from black label, I’ve seen black mop/white mop/lapis. I bet there are more and these are all unique piece I guess. I was told they used to do customised dial for optimum but not anymore unless you have reached to a certain amount of spending
Yes, there are others :)

Ultimately though, as others have said, whatever watch makes you smile the most is the one you go with. You could view the Optimum as having a "dead beat" seconds as the remontoir, as it ticks every second. But yes, the conventional seconds hand is sweepi...

After the release of 2020 resonance. I am now in between a new resonance or optimum. I understand the resonance is ultimately FP signature and the new dial layout speaks to me very well. However upon my research, the only issue with resonance seems that s...

The Resonance does sync- that’s the point. It can fall out of sync though if exposed to a shock or power runs low. You should probably go to an FPJ boutique as soon as you get the chance. I think you need to see and get a feel for a watch of this caliber....
