I think some very good advice has already been given …
If it is any help here are some of my own thoughts…
I have set up some guidelines for my self based on my own collecting experiences looking back. I have tried to write a summery for you below. If you find anything in them that you think useful please feel free and help yourself .
I know how my feelings and “collecting logic”can fluctuate. I really DONT enjoy the transactional side of buying and selling watches, so I try to make sure that I want to keep it for a very long time.
- always sleep several nights on a decision. I haven’t had luck with spontaneous purchases.
- if I am in doubt, I don’t buy. If I feel I can’t live without it - it’s right. Otherwise it’s not important enough. I like it but I pass.
- if I am in doubt, I don’t sell. If the watch continually feels like a burden - I sell.
- I have a cap on how much money I can put in to watches, relative to my net worth. It keeps me and my crazy dreams in check so things don’t get out of hand. I don’t have unlimited funds either and I don’t want to feel bad about what I have. Watches are only for pleasure. Not investing. What if they suddenly have no value. I don’t want to be in a situation where I am screwed.
- I like that watches mark a special occasion. Especially so, if I have achieved something and “I have deserved it”. It’s not a must, but it just adds a little bit of extra charm to the ownership and I think of that victory when I wear the watch.
- I really enjoy a theme in my collection. In the beginning I was collecting from the idea of diversity. Different types of watches, exploring my taste and ideas of what appealed to me. Different brands etc. after that phase I find it much more rewarding to go deep. My collection of F.P. Journe watches is really what gives me the most joy in terms of watches. Both on the wearer side but also intellectually. The is so much depth in the brand and there is always something new and fascinating to I can learn about the FPJ watches. 3/4 of my watches are from other brands and some I love dearly. Keepers for life. But they are thematically too spread out. I love some of them individually (some are just early learners) but I am thinking if i could find a second collecting theme that is as stimulating.
- I don’t enjoy having too many watches. I’m wearing 1/3 of my watches 3/4 of the time. There is just a limit to how many watches makes sense to me to own. . I need to scale the total down.
- Watches that are too precious or too fragile, too small/too big to wear comfortably they are not for me. I don’t need to own everything I love.
Kind regards
Christian
