F.P. Journe

I love this watch, though the retrograde date has never worked reliably on mine.

It's c.2004 (ruthenium).

I just got it back from servicing last month (because the watch had stopped running), and the very first time I tried to set the date after getting it back, it failed again as usual (I had already sent it back to FPJ 7 times for that same issue, back around 2016, but gave up when it kept recurring).

The problem is that when quick-setting the date manually (turning the crown after pulling it out one stop), the date indicator does not spring all the way back to "1." It gets hung up somewhere in the middle of the date range, usually around 7-8. Then I have to bang it with my hand a few times (to try to nudge it into position) and turn the crown some more. It then clicks into position at some random location and I can keep turning the crown until it gets to the last day of the month, to start over again and try to get it back to "1." The problem happens maybe 30% of the time.

FPJ had instructed me to turn the crown very slowly when it gets to the end of the month and I quick-set the date, but that didn't help. The problem happens even if I turn it slowly.

The "fix" for this -- the thing that always works fine -- is if I use the quick-set date only until the date indicator reaches the last day of each month. Then I pull the crown out all the way, to the time-setting position, and turn the time hands forward until the date changes from the last day of the month (28/29/30/31) to 1 (and then keep turning the crown until the time is at about noon on the 1st day of the month, to avoid problems). If I follow that procedure when setting the date, the date indicator always reliably springs back to "1" as it should and never hangs up in the middle. But it takes a lot longer to set the date this way, especially if I haven't worn the watch in many months, because I have to do this at the end of each month.

Also, sometimes the day indicator gets hung up in the middle (in between days), but turning the crown seems to fix that.

This movement that was never ready for prime time (it's quite unreliable), but it's a nice-looking watch so I've kept it and continue to enjoy wearing it.

Yours has a beautiful dial, by the way!
