Ha, much appreciated! :) I've learned to live with the inconsistency.
I was much more frustrated before I figured out how to coax it to the correct date when it malfunctioned, so that I didn't have to send it in for servicing every time the date indicator got hung up. Now it's like a vintage car or something, where I expect it to fail unpredictably but in a bounded way.
