Apple isn't a good comparison.
Under Steve Jobs, Apple still cared about customer satisfaction - which is why even when Jobs was still there, Apple paid a lot of attention to things like NPS, etc. The whole 'Jobs didn't care about the customer' line is a huge myth. As far back as the 80's, Jobs is on record saying that both the customer perspective and technology perspective have to be taken into consideration, and it's a mistake not to start with the customer.
I liken FPJ much more to an artist. He has a vision and he has a way he likes to achieve it. He's not going to sell out on his vision just to make a customer happy, and he's not going to sell out just to make money either. The fact that he's been able to achieve so much success as an independent shows that a lot of consumers are happy with that.
