I landed Ivalo airport in Lapland today - some 250 km north of the Arctic Circle
When looking at the screen of the plane, it wasn't too bad.
I left my other Cayanne to the airport some 3 months ago and when I went to the car, it started to look bad.
The car was totally frozen and the nice guys in the airport towed it to a warm hall to melt down. I will get my own tomorrow and had to rent a car. The temperature started to look worse.
Who said that it's dark in the arctic. Somewhere in the southern horizon there is the sun.
Towards the evening it always gets a bit colder. Tonight the temperature should go well below minus 40.
But who cares! Home was warm, around +22 degrees, when we came home and as first thing I heated up the sauna and put fire to two fireplaces.
The sky is totally clear and if I'll have nothing better to do tonight, I will go out, freeze a little bit and admire the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).
Fantastic to be in the Middle of Nowhere!

I will fly Singapore on 31st.
Now I enjoy this, then I'll go to London to enjoy the constant rains and after that to the heat of Singapore. Everything goes. Best, Kari

I don't mind the sauna though. That fire makes it look very cosy too.
Once I hunted in Greenland in the winter for 10 days.
We went around, some 200 km with dog sledges and the temperature stayed all the time below minus 40 degrees. We stayed overnight in tents and I'm still alive. A small memory of that trip in the wall in Lapland. Later on the same year I went to Selous in T...

Freezing outside, nobody around, wood fire, Northern lights... I would add a single malt, and a nice cigar and I would be set! Good to see the cars still operate ok @ -40C Thanks for your photo log, this kind of trip really appeals to me!

Holy ship, i'm freezing by simply watching your (amazing) photos. I'm complaining 'cause here is -5 C...overt here is not cold, it's an open air freezer ;-)
-40 is ok if you have the right gear
even easier when you get to enjoy the norhern lights. Spent one week in Bjorliden long ago, enjoying evey last bit of the auroras. Enjoy and bring us pictures!

I have been deep in Siberia at -40 and loved it. Going soon to Sabetta (google it) and we are expecting -60. I love seeing nature at its most primal.
I have expected just minus 50.
When it's really cold, it's not windy. Plus one can always warm the system from inside; grappa, whisky, vodka. Everything goes. Best, Kari
Unfortunately, where I am going, there is no acohol allowed.
Not a single drop, as weird as that sounds for Russia.
Oh the stories I could tell.
For example, pouring antifreeze down a frozen pipe. The chemicals get trapped bu the ice and pute alcohol drips at the bottom. Unbelievable. They really make science out of it.
I have also learned some tricks in FSU/Russia.
Personally I prefer the booze sold in normal western shops. Best Kari
Believe me, I don't partake in such activities.
Only grappa and wine in reputable places. As for russians, when it comes to alcohol, the stories are endless. We must exchange one day. Maybe you will visit us humble folk in Croatia someday.

We decided to come by car to Italian lakes and Croatia. Bit different summer holidays. The biggest problem is to decide if we should travel tight in the small car but fast or take the less consuming but still much more spacious Cayanne. Best, Kari
These days, no country allows for fast travel anymore.
Croatia does have some wonderful roads, though, and the drives around Italian lakes are astounding. If tou ask me, a Cayenne is a very good car to take as it offers both comfort and speed. PM me if you need any recommendations and suggestions for Croatia....
All you say it true and my Cayanne has a top speed exceeding 250 km/h.
But I wonder for what do I need a Ferrari then... I got some consultation from a Mod. already. I know a little bit about Croatia because I used to visit on business places like Split and Pula. Best, Kari

But you really should check out some of the islands. Although that is much better accomplished by chartering a boat.
I am sure you will fully enjoy it.
As long as you avoid a few of the \'party\' islands frequented by drunk and annoying teenagers.
We try to find something civilized

Glad to know your Cayenne is made of sterner stuff.
I drive a base Cayenne, my 9 month old baby. Paid some USD 300k for it. It hurts to think of the many horological pieces I have to forgo for the right to drive the SUV for 10 years.
My Lapland Cayanne is quite basic
but the one in Estonia is the V8 and well equipped. Anyhow, both are nice cars. Best, Kari
