Omega

At my age,

I mostly spend my time fishing or going after birds such as partridges, woodcocks, ducks, doves and so on.  So Patek Philippe watches (which I must acknowledge I’ve never liked much after many awful experiences) and so on are not useful for what I do regularly.  And when hunting and fishing you prefer not to be encumbered with heavy, bulky things on your body; therefore my everyday watch has become a trusty 36mm Explorer.

However, I carry the horological gene so every once in a while I lust after a new acquisition.  Now I look for sturdy watches that can take a beating at sea or in the woods.  That leaves me mostly with two options: more Rolex (I already have just about all of them), Omega or Tudor.  Except that I can’t find an Omega which isn’t the size of a hockey puck.  Although I have an old Seamaster which is pretty decent as it is rather thin.

Yesterday, though, I went to check on a Black Bay Pro (39mm).  I liked the GMT function and was attracted by the looks of the metal bracelet.  But upon having it in my hands, the head is so tall and the bracelet so light, almost flimsy, that I was quickly disappointed.  I mean, the case on this watch is very thick.  And the bracelet surprisingly light.  I walked across the hall to the Omega boutique but there was nothing new that wasn’t an anchor of sorts.

The long rant to say that the new watch market has nothing for me.  Huge watches and NATO straps are two things that I can’t understand.  For me they are like square wheels.

Below the Omega I own which I find rather acceptable:
